how much would it cost to get a taxi licence..? how much would it cost to buy a ladder and a bucket..? and if I'm not mistaken the individual can get funding so some set-up costs.

How am I supposed to know how much licences cost? I'm 19 and not look to go self employed. Is there any funding left after the cuts?

Surely it would help the unemployment figures if people thought to themselves that if no-one is prepared to offer them work then I will work for myself!!!

Pending on the Council you apply for its around £300 however you can earn around £50-£100 per day on the taxis so you woul get the money back in the first week.
Cleaning widows would probably get you at least £40 per day and those are just smaller scale examples

Well you need to have a skill/trade preferably as it would be impossible to have millions of odd job men.
It is possible to start from scratch but you are more likely to succeed if you have a healthy contact book, experience and some financial backing.
I honestly admire the self-employed but the truth is we all have our own individual abilities and some of them are not compatible with working as self-employed.

Also got to take into account owing the car and the maintance costs aswell as petrol plus the large competetive nature of the job with other taxi drivers.
Earning £40 a day is not exactlly going to feed your family though is it

In Newport I think the Taxi badge is now £100 p/a, the car plate is £300 p/a the insurance is at least £2k p/a and of course you need a car which can't be older than 3 years (at least £5-7,000).
When you throw in petrol at £1.31 per litre (although taxi drivers get a 20% VAT reduction) plus car maintanence (average £500 p/a) and rent to the taxi company (£100 p/w) and your £50-£100 per day starts to look pretty dire.

Sorry I was taking about take home pay for fleet drivers so that you dont have those other costs. With regards to the £40 window cleaning example then surely its better than doing nothing and on the dole..?

Whilst I agree but why should the tax payer be paying them to sit on their arses watching Jeremy Kyle if they don't want to understand the world of self employment

Fleet drivers mean that you are self employed working for someone else so you would use their car, insurance and so on.
