As Bellamy is expected to sign tomorrow I would say the midfield is complete and I would expect that one or two younger players may go out on loan, possibly Ralls being one of them.
The front line consisting of Velikonja, Helguson, Gestede, Mason and Earnshaw, I would like to see another striker brought in who is the big target man and I would then expect Earnie to be moved on.
Regards defence, at present we need cover at left back and another centre half. If Darcy moves on then I think we would need more cover at right back also.
Goalkeepers are fine.
So for me a striker and 2 defenders is required at present.
What are your thoughts ?

Think we need a proven target man up front, an attacking midfielder/winger & two "big" defenders, left & right.

I don't expect Malky to bring in another striker if I'm honest. I think we have ALOT of options there between Mason,Bellamy, Helguson, , Earnshaw and Velikonja. Granted that Bellamy won't start as a striker but he can do if needed and that will be the deciding factor of not getting another striker in.
Fully agree with you on the defenders. We had Naylor last year to cover at left back and if Taylor picked up an injury, we wouldn't have a left back solid worry there. Clearly a versatile full back is a position we need along with another decent centre half now that Gerrard has gone. Personally I think Kienan is up to the job but I don't think Malky sees it that way so I'd expect us to either sign or loan a defender there. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Gabbidon come back on a free. Not the greatest now but good enough for the bench.

Thought this was going to be a thread about Adam Brown's missing brain!

After Bellamy is confirmed I think we need some defensive cover - maybe a loan
Thu Aug 09, 2012 9:49 am
A full back, Macnaughton shouldn't be a regular anymore.

I've been saying the same message on various other threads lately. Worried that Malky is over strengthening in midfield (don't need Lawrence or Smith as we've got enough cover there) and not getting the defensive players we need and the target man who offers plan B. I would however accept Nicky Maynard if we couldn't get a target man
Thu Aug 09, 2012 9:54 am
If Darcy is moving on we definately need a defender who can cover full back and Centre back.Keogh would have been ideal but he wanted to play every game and we couldn't guarantee that.
Any further news on that Liverpool Defender coming on a season loan

I'd say we need a 20+ goalscorer, seems to have gone quiet on this mystery striker? I believe that Helguson can play the target man, I know hes not the tallest, but he is big and powerful.
Defender who can play across the back 4.
and a strong but quick CB as cover for Hudson and Turner.
I believe with this and CB39 we will challenge for top two and maybe even the title.
Good times ahead.

There are big question marks of age/fitness or ability over all our strikers except Mason. Definitely need another proven striker in his prime. Even with Bellamy we still wont have much pace up front or out wide (Don't believe Kim has real pace). Need a quick, tricky winger - Adomah from Bristol City would do nicely. If Darcy leaves we need three defenders on the assumption that Malky also wants rid of Keinan.Maybe young Nugent could be one of them but it would be a bit risky relying on it.

Carl, i'd be interested to know what your thoughts on Joe Mason are?
I know he's definitely one for the future but i honestly think even now he could score 20+ goals in a season if played week in week out and for this reason i don't think we need another striker! Do you agree or do you think he's not quite ready to be a 20 goal a season striker yet?
I think we need at least another 3 defenders, 2 of who can play centre half and 1 player each that can play in the full back roles.
Thu Aug 09, 2012 11:11 am
Just a thought but isn't Gunnasson the right-back cover?
Thu Aug 09, 2012 11:15 am
Morison on loan from Norwich be good but I suspect NCFC would insist he plays every week ???

Yea I heard he can play right-back
Being serious I think we have enough forwards and midfielders.
Another all round defender might do if Darcy goes.

I agree. As good as MacNaughton has been, he gave the ball away far too often last season, particularly in attacking positions. Consequently he was caught out of position when the opposition played the ball into the space behind him.
We also need a central defender to replace Gerrard and a left-back to replace Naylor and provide Taylor with some competition.
I would have liked MM to bring in a proven goal scorer at this level but I suspect that he will only go for another striker if Earnshaw leaves.
Thu Aug 09, 2012 11:26 am
dfeinetly agree about super kev,hes far from past it but struggled with the role malky expected him to play last season, hes a very good full back but not a wing back
i really do hope darcy stays,he has a lot to offer the team and impressed when called upon last season, but malky just doesnt seem to trust him as a centre back
if malky can bring in a player similar to darcy than i believe we have enough to be going on with, maybe strengthen further in january
Thu Aug 09, 2012 11:27 am
i still think we need a proven goalscorer at this level. someone like maynard, with earnie being moved on would be perfect for me.
as for defense, i think we need to be looking at bringing in a top quality centre back, someone who can take hudsons place in the team. that would be it for me (because i wouldnt let darcy blake go) but if he does we need full back cover as well.

I think Joe IS our 20 a season striker.
He scored a dozen last season in his first attempt at championship football.
That as a bit part player often dropping back or playing out wide. People
say hes good in the hole between midfield and attack.
I reckon we stick him right up top.
How many Joe Mason MISSES can you all remember from last season?
He hits the target, he is unruffled and clinical.
The more I think about it. f**k Maynard. Joe is going to prove a far more
prolific goalscorer than him.
If your good enough... your old enough!!!

This is EXACTLY what i think.
Forget shoving him on the wing, let's put the trust in Joe Mason, play him up front, and watch the goals fly in!

Is it coincidence that there is a f**k off big picture of him on the frontage

Be big mistake to lose Darcy, he gives us alot of options, the ability to play full back, CB and centre Mid. Be bit gutted as a fan to lose him, especially since hes come through our academy.
Thu Aug 09, 2012 12:35 pm
i dont see that about Mason, personally i think his one on one finishing was a weak point to his game which did seem to get better as the season went on.
hopefully its something the club have been working on

The punchlines in Adam Browns "jokes".
Thu Aug 09, 2012 1:08 pm
A fast right winger who can cross the ball accurately will complete the squad.
Thu Aug 09, 2012 1:29 pm
Maybe 1 more striker ( with Rudy or Earnie leaving) and a RB, CB
Thu Aug 09, 2012 1:47 pm
Definitely at least two defenders who are capable of fighting for a first team place but have the right attitude to cope with being cover(Gerrard and Blake opposites). Our midfield/offensive forward line hasn't looked this promising since the January we were lucky enough to have Aaron Ramsey back. Even if we don't bring anyone else in with Bellamy up top(which i don't believe)then we have an exciting forward line/attacking midfield to choose from. The problem why we didn't kick on last January was the small squad burnt out and if we had quality reinforcements like we have now with people like Bellamy, Mutch, Mason and Conway who could adapt to most positions in the opposing half then we'd possibly be up already. 2 or 3 more acquisitions and I'll be placing rather a large bet on automatic promotion
Thu Aug 09, 2012 1:51 pm
I would still like to see another target man type striker and two quality central defenders if Blake is moving on and a utility fullback . All good teams have a strong defence which will take the pressure off if we are not scoring. I am not convinced our defence as a unit is good enough. We gave away so many "easy" goals last season that turned wins to draws etc.
Thu Aug 09, 2012 3:40 pm
A new Darcy Blake
- a standing area at the CCS
- clarkes pies
Thu Aug 09, 2012 3:40 pm
How good has Ben Nugent been over the pre-season? Is he good enough to act as cover for Taylor?
I really don't want Darcy to leave but if he hasn't got the want to challenge first team players then sod him.
I agree about McNaughton but I prefer him at CB anyway. He's even better on the left than the right I think.
I think I would like to see Gunnar at RB to see how it goes. Could be a winner especially with the cover we have in midfield.
I'm not sure we need any more signings up top as long as CB39 does come back home.
