NEW Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers accepts he is unable to halt Craig Bellamy’s move to home-town club Cardiff City, admitting: “He is going for compassionate reasons.”
Rodgers had previously stated he saw Bellamy as an important part of his Kop revolution, arguing only compelling out-of-the-box reasons would persuade him to part company with the 33-year-old.
But Rodgers says Bellamy decided at the end of last season he wanted to return to Wales for personal reasons.
After holding talks with Bellamy and also Cardiff’s hierarchy, Rodgers is planning for the new Premier League campaign without him.
With two pre-season matches this week against Bournemouth and Barry out of the way, Mackay will put his energies into trying to resolve the complications standing in the way of the Bellamy deal.
The issues are thought to include how Bellamy is released from his £90,000-a-week Anfield contract and how much of that salary the Bluebirds’ Malaysian owners could afford.
Liverpool and Cardiff are understood to have agreed in principle on a free transfer.
The Bluebirds do not believe the deal will be done in time for Saturday’s friendly with Newcastle at Cardiff City Stadium, but Mackay expects Bellamy to be on board for the Championship opener with Huddersfield a week tomorrow.
Asked if Bellamy would join the Bluebirds, Rodgers replied: “I would think so.”
He continued: “He has made a massive commitment to come to Liverpool, to reside up here on his own.
“He enjoys playing for the club, but I believe that at the end of last season he had already made his decision.
“I obviously respect that. What is so important is a player’s happiness. Unless a player is happy you don’t get the maximum from them.
“Cardiff is probably where he will end up. If he does, we wish him the very best. He will still be a Liverpool supporter.
“It is not for football reasons that he is leaving but for personal ones.
“I understand his thinking. He is 33 and has travelled around the country for his whole career, so there are compassionate reasons.
“We will look at it, but we will wish him the best and move forward.
“He is not one who can play every week, he is 33 and coming towards the final years of his career.”
Bellamy’s former Wales, Manchester City and Blackburn boss Mark Hughes is still hopeful of trying to gazump the Bluebirds’ deal and try to land his former star for Queens Park Rangers.
But Hughes’ bid looks like failing with Bellamy keen to finish his career by helping Cardiff up into the Premier League.
He will be expected to regain the captaincy at the club, with Mark Hudson standing aside. That is what happened last time Bellamy joined on loan under Dave Jones’ stewardship in 2010-11.
