Lawrence return a long shot

According to BBC Sports, Cardiff City, are interested in former loan signing Liam Lawrence. He spent three months at the Cardiff City stadium last season it was not an overly successful stint in the eyes of many Cardiff fans.

The Cardiff manager Malky Mackay is an admirer of midfielder Lawrence saying so before signing him last season, but is there room in the Cardiff squad. Everyone knows the woes surrounding Portsmouth and their future, they need to move to Lawrence and Tal Ben Haim the only senior players left on the books at Portsmouth off the payroll. Administrator Trevor Birch has indicated Pompey will be liquidated this Friday unless the futures of the club’s senior players can be resolved.

It could be why local radio station BBC Radio Solent gave a phone call to see if he had any interest Mackay said,

"Liam did great for me last season.

"He was a fantastic professional, he came in and did a fantastic job for me last season in the period he was at the club.

"He is a really good character, a good player and a great professional to have around.

"We've got targets that we want to bring into the club, but I can't say whether Liam is one of them."

Lawrence scored last weekend in a 3-0 over Bolton has Portsmouth put him in the shop window to try to entice some interest. One thing is for sure Portsmouth fans will be on their hands and knees’ praying the rumour is true.

He was shite in my eyes, overpaid and over rated - there must be better players out there than Lawrence. :o

Those better players wont be happy sitting on the bench, they'll want to play games. If we can reduce the wages for Lawrence, say under 8k a week, I think he would be good cover on a 2 year contract.

Last season we lacked depth in our squad.......if we're looking at better players, I wouldnt want to waste wages on him sitting on the bench all day. I think we're in a better position to offer Lawrence reduced terms.

I totally agree and we were paying him £20,000 a week.

As I said in another thread, If we are aiming for promotion, we should be aiming for players that will hack it in the premiership. In my eyes, Lawrence is not one of them. Although, am grateful for the job he did when he came in. The only way I'd ever take lawrence on is if he was being paid less than £6k a week, otherwise I wouldn't bother!

you say that, but will bellamy and helguson hack it in the prem next season if we get there?

these players will probably have to move on ( i imagine bellamy would stay and be a bit part player) but what we need right now is players who can get us there in the first place, Lawrence is a great player, although 20k, or even 15k a week is far too much imo

He still scored one and assisted 5 in his time. Id say he was one of our most creative players whilst he was here.

CREATIVE!!! Do me a favour!

He was a solid player, who kept the ball more often than not, and usually managed to find his team mates with short passes and touch and go's! But hardly creative.....

When the word creative is mentioned, for some reason I tend to think of players like whitt's, Ambrose, That 4ft 1" short arse Jack b*stard, Burke, Emnes, Zaha etc etc I don't find Liam Lawrence creative at all !

5 Assists and a goal doesn't really warrant £20k a week to me, and we can find far better on wages HALF of that IMO. Not that we need any more Midfielders? Money much better being spent on defensive cover, and another striker or winger?

The idea is we sign him on far less than 20k. He's already announced he's willing to sign a long term contract with Pompey at 5k a week if no one goes in for him.

If we offer 8k between now and tomorrow then that'll be more than he's likely to get elsewhere and he'll atleast have the stability and regular wage of a club with a committed backer so even if we give him the role of a squad player I'm sure he'd be happy with it.

No matter how low the wages are he wont stand a chance in the team..
Im really suprised if MM does want him.. We got Cowie, Whittingham, Kiss, Gunnarsson, Mutch, McPhail.. We can get way better than Lawrence and we need 2 defenders, Bellamy, Striker. :ayatollah:

There wasn't a question.

But, no. We have 2 people who play wide? (3 if you count Bellers) Cowie and Conway. Whits plays a central role as we've seen over the last season. Lawrence is a quality wideman with a great eye for a pass and put 100% in for Cardiff when he played for us. He'd be a great asset for a squad player.

Do you consider 'midfield' as just one position? You realize there's more than just one position in midfield right? Although then again, you thought Akinfenwa was better than Heskey.

You think Lawrence is a good wide man? No chance in hell. Cowie is a central midfielder.. played out of position in my opinion. :ayatollah:

He proved it for us on loan, and Cowie is a midfielder who can play right and central, I think he copes well on the left too. ;)
