Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has started assessing the disruption Cardiff City will suffer because of international calls next week.
Don Cowie and goalkeeper David Marshall are both in Scotland’s squad for their home clash with Australia next Wednesday, which is 24 hours after the Bluebirds play Northampton Town in the League Cup and 48 hours before they take on Huddersfield Town at home in the opening Championship fixture.
Manager Mackay is resigned to being without a large contingent of players for the cup tie, while he is angry City’s League opener against Huddersfield Town has been brought forward a day because of live Sky television coverage.
“Some of my players will be asked to play for their country on the Wednesday and for Cardiff two days later, which is ludicrous,” says Mackay.
“There is little we can do as a club, but I will be talking to all the international managers involved. They, too, are in a difficult position and I understand that, but I will ask them to be as understanding as possible.”
Mackay will ring Chris Coleman (Wales), Craig Levein (Scotland), Lars Lagerback (Iceland) and any other international managers who call up City players to talk through the situation.
Aron Gunnarsson was Iceland’s captain in their last international, although the battling midfield player has been having treatment for a minor back problem which means he will miss City’s pre-season match at Bournemouth tonight.
Wales manager Coleman could include Darcy Blake, Robert Earnshaw and potentially Ben Turner for their home match against Bosnia. Filip Kiss could be considered by Slovakia, who play in Denmark, and manager Giovanni Trapattoni could look to the future and call up striker Joe Mason in his Republic of Ireland squad in Serbia as he plans for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
