CARDIFF CITY boss Malky Mackay has urged fans to stay behind their team when the club’s controversial new red home kit is worn for the first time against Newcastle.

After backer Vincent Tan forced through the rebranding there has been anger in some quarters with some supporters having their season-ticket money refunded.

Now, ahead of the visit of Alan Pardew’s Magpies on Saturday, Mackay hopes fans will stick together when it comes to matters on the pitch.

“It’s been an on-going debate throughout the whole summer, but red will be our home colour next season,” said Mackay.

“I’m the manager and I just want us all to be proud of our team on the pitch and our football club.

“I desperately want the fans to come and support their club and their team.

“People do have to make their own mind up about how they show their support – but this is their team.

“All I would ask is that when our boys are on the pitch they support them, which is what they have always done in the past.”

Newcastle surprised many in the Premier League last season by finishing fifth and qualifying for the Europa League.

They include the likes of Senegal strikers Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba and France midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa in their ranks.

“It is a smashing game for us,” said Mackay.

“Alan is a good friend of mine and I’m delighted he’s agreed to bring his side down here.

“It’s going to be a very tough test because they were fantastic last season, they were a real surprise package.

“It’s the last game for both of us before the season starts proper and by then you usually go with what you are ready to roll with.”

Before the Newcastle game the Bluebirds travel to Bournemouth on Tuesday for their penultimate pre-season friendly.

To be fair I think most of us anti re-brand supporters will be 100% behind the team as usual.

I hope so mate, because i would hate to see an even more hostile atmosphere at the CCS. :?

There are many idiots on here who are on about protesting/booing inside the stadium for the Huddersfield game.

That to me is just bonkers!! :ayatollah:

We are all Cardiff City FC fans, no matter what the colour. :ayatollah:

He didn't say anything bad. And how can you say that when fans have asked for season ticket refunds and others sworn not to set foot in the stadium whilst we play in red?

A difficult shout , those who do not agree with the rebrand yet voice no disapproval for the sake of the team , might be seen in some quarters as being in agreement with Tan's actions.

I strongly disapprove of Tan's unilateral rebrand ,and want to show my disapproval in a manner that he will be aware of yet will not impact negatively on the team .

Huddersfield game presents an opportunity to protest in Tan's face yet could also impact badly on the team hence the dilema .

For me it simple. We should do nothing to distract the team. Every point is vital so all our focus shoud be supporting the team. End of. :ayatollah:
