Howdo you get gout?

Sympathise mate, worked for years in Orthopaedics and know how damaging and painful gout can be, seen hundreds of people and the pain is etched in their face, seen it so bad you can see the foot almost glowing and red hot.

Wouldn't wish it on anyone, even if they had six fingers. lol

I'm suffering at the moment as well. Run out of cherry tablets that I was taking along with the daily glasses of cherry juice. Currently dosed up to the max with co-codamol!

Bakedalaska

It's a build up of crystals in the joints and can happen to anyone at anytime it seems,it only started for me around 3 years ago,I tried every drug available and nothing worked,I was suffering 2 attacks a week and they lasted at least 2 days a real b*stard :x ,it would come on within an hour normally when I was sleeping and the only way to control it was Naprosyn and co- codamol 30/500(like tramadol) taking 2 of each alternately every two hours for 2 days which was surely damaging my kidneys then I tried cherry juice after researching gout on the net and bingo no more attacks and no more tablets until I decided not to top up....Knobhead I am.............If anyone has gout try cherry juice,it's nice to drink and you can by 4 cartons for 3 bucks in asda and no more tablets(for me anyway),as Gwyn said I would not wish it on anyone especially when you sit at the back of 115,a real b*stard walking up them steps :ayatollah:

Sounds horrific.

While out in the Middle East I injured my big toe while training. The doctor said I had gout. Within a week it had gone after the medication. Now I'm not sure if the doctor was right or it was just a simple pull of a ligament. Going on what you are saying just glad whatever it was has gone away.

Get that cherry juice down you chap.

I had gout diagnosed about 15 months ago after having severe swelling and intense pain in the ankle. I put it down to playing 5 a-side and getting older (only 38 at time). It usually came on overnight and is the worst pain ive ever experienced. After 2 blood tests the doctor diagnosed gout and gave me allopurinol, one tablet every day (probably for life). I haven't had an attack since taking the tablets where i was having an attack every 6 weeks or so before. Worth having the blood tests and a chat to your GP as other mediacation is available.

I know exactly how you feel mate. I started suffering from gout after my first back operation 11 years ago, it is a horrifying pain especially when you get it full blown (big swelling of limb, redness to limb, shiny skin of the limb, hot limb, etc). Due to my gout, sciatica, CRPS and 5 prolapsed discs in my back, I have not been able to work, or pretty much leave my house, for 12 years. For about 7-8 years I was getting gout at least every two weeks and it would last for a week at at time or sometimes even more, once I had gout for a whole month. Then I was prescribed Allopurinol 100ml, one a day, but that did not work at all so I was told to take another 100ml tablet and that didn't work either. So, a few more years pass and I am still having terrible gout, so now my doctor tells me to take 500ml of Allopurinol a day. I still suffer with gout now and then but not as much as I used to, thank god. I always seem to get gout in my ankles and knees and a few occasions I have had it in both ankles and both knees at the same time and literally I have been suicidal due to the excruciating pain. How to describe it to somebody who does not know what it feels like, I would have to say the pain would be similar to breaking your leg badly and not having a cast on it and then having to walk on it.

Are there any other gout sufferers who have bouts of gout (hehe :D ) in either of their knees as I have been told by my Rheumatologist that it is not very common? I pretty much think that I am an expert in gout now as I have learnt nearly everything about it.

Below I have uploaded a picture of a minor bit of gout that I had in my right knee last week:-

Not too sure mate but it seems it attacks and breaks down the crystals,I picked some up yesterday morning and worked last night with no probs.I would advise anyone with gout to give it a try it's far better for you than medication and it's refreshing to drink.
