QPR's NEW BADGE - OUR STORY

Tue Jul 31, 2012 4:18 pm

Firstly lads I just want to say I'm just sharing my thoughts with you. Feelings are obviously running high on here at the moment over Langstone, badge, re brand & all sorts so I'm not here to antagonise but to share something we had at QPR you are all now experiencing yourselves.

I've supported QPR for over 30 years now. I go to near enough every home & away game & have done since as a nipper, its my club & love them. All I've ever known is blue & white hoops, birthday cards, cakes, posters, bed covers the lot you know what I'm saying. As I got to 14 ish I dropped out the football scarf & top & started wearing decent clobber & since then have never once wore & football top, hat scarf, now that's not me being 'to cool' or any shit like that its just me but it doesn't mean I love the club any less.

So down the years after going regularly to such places like Grimsby, Cheltenham, Chesterfield, Mansfield, Cardiff etc my loyalty could never be questioned. Then.. It was a new dawn, we had years of scrimping but then the waiter (Paladini) had brought on board two extremely successful businessmen in Bernie Ecclestone & Flavio Briatore who were then joined my the richest man in the UK Lakshmi Mittal, it was like.. What?! QPR? Us? It was like all our Christmas came at once it was what we'd all wanted for years, successful people with money to come in & take us to the next level.

Anyway to cut a long story short they promised Premiership football within 4 years. Premiership football WAS delivered within 4 years but some may say at a cost. A cost? I will explain.

Last game of the season 3 years ago word spread around the pubs pre match that there was to be a 'big announcement' before kick off, it was all a bit strange so as usual we had our liquor & strolled up the Bush to the ground as we sat there 15 mins till KO time all this dramatic music came on & loads of people came out onto the pitch, they started to unravel a massive plastic sheet which turned out to be our new club badge! Everyone was like 'are they fcuking serious' .. No words prior, no talks between club & fans just boom out of the blue our badge which I had grown up with & all er knew was gone, like that to be replaced by a ponsey crest with swirls & a fcuking crown on it. To say the atmosphere was shit that day would be an understatement. It was the first time I realised it didn't matter how much more I loved the club than Briatore or how longer I'd been going, I effectively wasn't paying the bills, he was, so therefore could do as he pleases. I was gutted, pissed off, angry & my feels were not exclusive, it led to a lot of in fighting between fans, animosity for the pro & against factions (sound familiar) & ultimately it spoiled my summer.

I spoke to my brothers about it & one of them Arthur said to me 'listen this is football now, its how it is its a numbers game, these guys could be the best thing that's ever happened to us IF they stick to there promises & bankroll promotion & then back us in the Premiership' until then he said 'let's give them that chance' 'yes its sad about the badge but honestly what do we want a badge with sentimental value or a club on the up going places?' 'If they fcuk up & lie to us we will kick off, hound them out & all the rest of it but until them give them the chance to see through there vision' And he was right they DID stick to there word, they did back Warnock & they did ultimately leave us in safe hands with Tony Fernandes & the Mittal family.

The point I'm making is as hard as it is to see your badge gone & of course your colours (not sure how I'd of reacted to that tbh) I feel these guys who are ploughing in money for overheads etc & no doubt transfers must be given a chance. I'm not saying accept it but give them the chance to make you a giant once again. I was so bitter about our own troubles with the owners but look now, without them would we have Ji Sung Park, Junior Hoilett, Mark Hughes, a 45,000 seated stadium being planned & all the rest. That only came about because the owners did it their way plain & simple.

I'm not telling anyone what to do as its not my place all I'm saying is in the long run it could be vital & lets honest bloody good times for Cardiff City Football Club.

Sorry for going on just wanted to explain best I could from a fan that has experienced much the same as what you are going through.

Stan your right a bit long winded   but to be fair a cracking post. To secure our footballing future we have to embrace change. Not for change sake but for the financial future of our club. I bet you and all your friends rebelled at first but look where you are now.

No one down here whats to play in red but for the time being we have to. Lets hope we get the success you have by the change.

Good luck to you and QPR for the forth coming season :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

As I say trust me it was very begrudgingly accepted amongst fans at the time but in the long run if your owners stick to promises made you boys will be a force again.

Let's be honest its all set up for you, staidum, fan base, location, owners.

If people will never change than that's fair enough they should be respected but at the same time would those folk who've seen you at the bottom rung be happy to sit by & watch at home as Manchester Utd, Chelsea & Arsenal roll into town every other week?

I'm going on again aint I :)

Good sensible post as always Stanley

2 questions

1. Where do you reckon the site of the new ground will be? Still in the W12 area or will you have to move out of town?

2. Do you think you will get close to filling a 45,000 stadium? I would have my doubts but you never know.

Good luck for this season.

Thanks lads. As I say we've been there & come out the other side so thought it was worth mentioning. You'll get through this & prosper hopefully.

Ruislip mate the site is rumoured to be the Linford Christie Stadium site off the scrubs next to the prison.

45,000, Well the plan is to make it a multi functional venue. It will have a retractable roof on it to cater for music events, sporting, boxing etc. Our CEO Philip Beard was the top man at the O2 before QPR poached him so we have the best man for such a project. The talk is on match days it will be approx 30,000 whereas during an event or concert an extra top tier can be open with an extra 15,000 seats. Seems very sensible & will of course bring us much needed revenue.

Sounds like a great plan. However, I can see lots of problems with building on the scrubs. From my understanding its a local nature reserve and there are loads of groups who oppose building on it.

Artillery Lane is way too narrow to get thousands of people and cars in there and East Acton Station will have to be improved beyond recognition. Then there's the prison, the hospitals, the schools all of which are next door.

Your CEO got nice little job on his hands. Good luck

Re: QPR's NEW BADGE - OUR STORY

Tue Jul 31, 2012 6:14 pm

Apologies if I've missed anything, were your club in similar debts to us?

Good post, it makes some fans think, it's not saying buy the shirts and all that, become a complete red but if you keep your loyalty then you have a chance to be a part of becoming part of history

Re: QPR's NEW BADGE - OUR STORY

Tue Jul 31, 2012 6:36 pm

Haha yes your right why didn't I apeak sooner :)

Thanks again fellas. Not here for back slaps but I do think its important to acknowledge people when they've taken time to post.

Ruislip I believe what you wrote is pretty spot on mate but that is the talk whether it can happen who knows but all kinds of improvements will have to be made to the area but hey maybe that's part of the plan? A new high speed line is going to be built in Old Oak Common Lane which is 5 mins away so that will tie in nicely with that.

Great last post mate & what you said is exactly how I felt. I wouldn't buy merchandise, I wouldn't spend money in the club shop I just want our club to succeed, now I buy my kids the kits, merchandise, programmes etc as I've accepted its been for the better of the club & hink that's what will happen with you boys. Slowly but surely we're getting there. Also your other point yes our club was approx £30m in debt due to a historic debt owed to Panama based company ABC which was slowly killing us, we couldn't even pay the interest on it never mind the debt itself, that debt has now gone thanks to our board & the club is debt free.

Yes we are paying massive wages on a small capacity (18,500) but our owners know it has to be done to compete & stay in the PL & keep the big bucks coming in. An article in a paper last week said QPR had sold 225,000 shirts in Asia over the last month which was estimated to be around £12m revenue for the club, enough to pay Park Ji Sung, Hoillets & Rob Greens wages for a fair while yet.

Not even a close comparison.

The club kept and honoured the hoops, they didn't change them to red and white hoops and if anything the new badge highlights your identity - it certainly does not detract from it.

Our club has not given a shit about our identity.

Course its a close comparison, both our badges were completely changed?!

I mentioned about us not having our colours changed & that I don't know how I would of reacted, as it didn't happen I can't say how I would of felt.

The point being when owners this day & age get a grip of a club, pay the bills etc ultimately they can do what they want but its not always for the worst I made the example that by our owners doing things their way it has paid off for me, QPR FC, other Rangers fans & the whole club, staff etc.

In a nutshell Cardiff City Fc can flourish big time if things go the way the Malaysians have planned.

Outstanding post, Stan. These are very difficult times for the City, but it's good to get a view from a proper football man who has been through something similar. I will never accept anything other than blue as our primary colour. Tweak the badge a bit, fine, no problem. Most of us will stick with the club; lets see how things pan out. Best of luck to the Rs next season :ayatollah:

Re: QPR's NEW BADGE - OUR STORY

Very good post Stan and great to get an 'outsiders' view of proceedings much like yourself i have supported City over 40 years and personally i hate the changes at our Club. However i realise sometimes you have to change in order to prosper and maybe i'm just an old fart who hates the idea of change at my Club but i love it too much to walk away!

So i think we have to accept these changes for now and see where it takes us BUT the Malaysians have to deliver or it will get very messy. What i want to see more than anything is City supporters whether Blue, Red or indifferent to all pull together get behind Malky and the team and hopefully roar us onto the Premiership where hopefully we can renew accquantices with QPR.

All the best for next season and please make sure you take 6 points from our six fingered friends from down West ;) :old:

Whilst I agree your badge was changed, it is still identifiable as your badge. Yes the 'scrolls' were added and the initials dropped, but the hoops were incorporated - your identity was preserved and if anything enhanced, in the same way as Arsenals or Wales has been for example. People may or may not like It, but take the name off and it is unmistakeable as a QPR badge.

I would suggest that ours has not been improved upon, nor does it retain/enhance our identity.
