Peter Whittingham reluctant to make a splash in Switzerland

Peter Whittingham is going nowhere, says Malky Mackay
CARDIFF City playmaker Peter Whittingham is far more comfortable with the ball at his feet than he was taking the plunge in Switzerland last week.

He wasn’t at ease with a dip into Lake Geneva during the Bluebirds’ pre-season training camp in Nyon – and won’t be rushing back to repeat his white water rafting experience either.

“We went for a cool down after training in Lake Geneva,” says Whittingham.

“The water was right next to our hotel and the coaching staff decided to utilise that.

“It was freezing.

“Some of the lads decided to jump straight in and then realised how silly that was.

“They were moments to laugh about.”

Whittingham, who is attracting strong attention from Premier League Fulham, was also far from impressed with the white water rafting on a river near Geneva.

“White water rafting wasn’t something I wanted to do and I won’t be doing it again,” says Whittingham.

“I accept it was a good laugh and a fantastic bonding session, but my side of the boat was pretty weak.

“I didn’t go under the water, though, even when a lot of people were trying to bombard our raft. We stayed strong and got through it.”

And Whitts also found it “a bit weird” to have a week away preparing for the new season without a match to aim for.

City players spent their week in Nyon, Switzerland hitting the training ground – with two sessions a day.

“It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure,” Whittingham told Cardiff City Player. “It was a bit weird with no games and the work seemed to be non-stop.

“This is a part of the season footballers hate the most and maybe the lads might have preferred a game to break up the week rather than just running.

“But that’s what the gaffer wants, we get on with and we will certainly be all the fitter for this experience.”

Fulham have had two offers for Whittingham rejected, the highest £2m, and manager Malky Mackay is adamant, saying: “They were turned down flat. We want to keep our best players.”

City are training at their Vale of Glamorgan base this week before a first pre-season match against Blue Square Premier League club Forest Green Rovers on Saturday (3pm).
