QPR discuss bid for Liverpool FC and Wales striker Craig Bellamy
Jul 24 2012

QPR have discussed the prospect of signing Cardiff City target Craig Bellamy, vice-chairman Amit Bhatia has revealed.

Liverpool striker Bellamy has been tipped for a move to the Bluebirds or Rangers after taking part in the Olympics with Great Britain.

New Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has expressed his desire to keep the 33-year-old at Anfield but Rangers could yet swoop for the Welshman.

Bellamy, who is entering the final year of his contract, played under QPR boss Mark Hughes both for Wales and at Manchester City and Blackburn.

Cardiff are keen to bring Bellamy back to his hometown club and the player's personal circumstances could yet see him leave Anfield this summer.

Bellamy enjoyed a successful loan spell at Cardiff City Stadium two years ago as the club failed to achieve promotion to the Premier League under former boss Dave Jones.

Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay has remained tight-lipped on the prospect of bringing Bellamy home but he is known to have a good relationship with the Wales star, with whom he played at Norwich.

Bhatia told Sky Sports News: “Craig is definitely a name that has been mentioned, a name we’ve discussed. There are a few options.

“We have been a fan of Craig Bellamy for the last few years, ever since he became available – that’s not to say we have not been fans of other players.

“Many names have been tossed about, and who Mark settles on eventually will be his, and we’ll do our best to support him.”

QPR have also been linked with Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe and Bhatia added: “It would be hard to speculate at this point.

“It’s not the right thing to do. Mark likes to have a long list of players. We’ll see what happens.

“Many of the players we are after potentially have interest from other clubs also.”

Doesn't seem to be anything explicitly new in that, they mentioned they had talked to him previously. You'd figure just weeks away from the new season, despite the Olympics, Bellamy would have made up his mind and started some cogs by now.

Some of the people who think Bellamy would leave Liverpool for us are deluded, had a good season last year why would they get rid?

Surely a contradiction in terms. It wasn't successful as, despite a few decent performances and a winner against the Jacks, ultimately we failed to see a return on his huge wage bill (adding to our debt) as we didn't go up.

I think we should stay well clear and stick to Malky's tried and tested route of no prima-donars

That was widely claimed at the time but I think is nonsense. Dave Sugarman (TLG) has given chapter and verse on it a number of times on CCMB. I think it was the club AGM last year when the Chief Executive was asked directly if Craig was paid out of VT's pockets - or otherwise funded in a way that was outside the players budget - and the answer was 'No'.
