The Stock Market

Tue Jul 24, 2012 1:20 pm

Anyone invest any money in stocks and shares? I'm thinking on dipping my toe into this and was interested if anyone had any advice or links to good reading on the subject? Or good people to follow on Twitter etc??

Some Yank moved to Asia years ago. Sorry, can't remember his name now for the life of me, but it was a piece in the Sunday Times. He reckons the West doesn't have the returns now that he likes, so he's heavily invested over there.

Not a great help, sorry, but might be worth trawling the Times archives from this year or last year.

If you have LOTS os patience there is a company out there called 'Sound Oil' and they are being heavily backed by the Malaysian Government in a quest for oil

Their shares are pennies to buy BUT when/if they strike liquid gold (and they are VERY confident it is when not if) the profits will be surreal, i.e. from pennies to several (if not lots) of £'s per share

I have money invested with them and in my mind have written it off. However, come the day I will be able to retire a pretty rich individual

WARNING: As with ALL investments there are NO guarantees :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Not the best time at the mo, i would wait until retail figures come out in January next year, should give you a better idea of how the economy performs but also depends on how Spain avoid going under and Germanys rating.

If your in for long term gains insurance is always the best bet, but over a few years. Admiral always a good one but pricey long term half decent, stay away from banks and building societies.
Best to check the independent and look at companies highs and lows over the last couple years.
Any negative news on specific companies will not help price.
Look out for any russian oil companies floating on uk as you should get a good return. Don't do Internet companies over priced.

I would honestly wait till next year but you could make some small gains if the Olympics go ok and you go for some uk based companies.

Firstly as mentioned you need lots of patience and secondly you need to think what does the future hold..?

For example my last flitter in the stock market was on stagecoach because I felt at the time more and more people will be using public transport. In around six years the price went from 50 odd pence per share to around 160 :ayatollah:

However I'm seriously looking into Falklands Oil and Gas at the moment: http://www.lse.co.uk/SharePrice.asp?SharePrice=FOGL

very good advice....

our share prices are low and worth getting a few, thomas cook are going through a massive re structure and have just acquired intourist, which is currently the largest travel company in russia. (also hosting world cup in few yrs time) the russians are spending big bucks on holidays at the moment, particuarly to turkey and bulgaria... thomas cook have sold off the non profit making brands in india, and europe. sales from march to date are up on prior yr and looking good for the remaining summer season..

not a short term here but more for a longer term investment... end of financial yr for thomas cook is september so worth a look at the results then.
