Cardiff Earnshaw has still not come to terms with red kit

Robert Earnshaw

Jul 8 2012

STRIKER Rob Earnshaw says he has still not come to terms with the prospect of Cardiff City playing in a red kit next season.

The 31-year-old came through the trainee ranks to start his career with the Bluebirds before leaving for West Bromwich Albion in 2004 and going on to Norwich, Derby and Nottingham Forest.

Now in his second spell at Cardiff, Earnshaw admits the change, instigated by the club’s Malaysian owners, will take some getting used to.

“To be honest it’s still not quite sinking in. It’s like someone playing a little bit of a joke,” he said.

“It’s going to be weird, though. For me at 16 coming through I was playing in blue and I’ve always played in blue. Coming back last year it was blue.

“All the fans who have supported the team going back years, maybe even before my time, they’ve always known blue.

“It’s going to be really strange, but we’ll see how it goes.”

Earnshaw believes there will be added pressure on City to start the season well

“With all the things that’s been happening in the last couple of months there’s going to be a lot of pressure with it,” said Earnshaw.

“It’s only going to be okay if the team does well and if it doesn’t then I know everyone around here will question everything.

“The focus is going to be getting ready and trying to do well and hopefully that happens.”

It was a frustrating season for Earnshaw last term, with the Welsh international forced to endure long spells of inactivity on the substitutes’ bench.

But he is adamant he is up for the battle to prove himself to manager Malky Mackay when the next campaign begins.

He added: “I never enjoy sitting on the bench because I think it’s more frustrating when you feel you’ve got more to give than to sit there and watch games
“My mind is no different to a year ago when I was on a free and speaking to all different clubs.

“That’s where I want to be.

“I came to play for Cardiff City and it was a decision where I turned down a lot of people to come here.”

“I never enjoy sitting on the bench because I think it’s more frustrating when you feel you’ve got more to give than to sit there and watch games.

“I’m never going to be happy sitting and watching games. We’ll see what happens, but I’m going to be focused on ready to play.

“I’ve got a lot more years left and I want to be enjoying it. I want to be on the pitch playing.”

In a way I'm glad the reality of all this change is hitting some of the players also.
Certainly the longer standing players like Earnie!!!

I've always liked Earnie and I hope he gets his chance and does well this year. :ayatollah:

Just hope, come the Huddersfield game the players remember to pass it to a man in Red :ayatollah:

Not following the party line...... He must be hoping or thinking he is leaving soon.

I can't remember him struggling to "come to terms" with playing in blue and white stripes after us though.

Before everyone starts, nobody wants this, but the reality is we have no choice......

Of course it is going to be weird seeing City play in Red, that will be the same for everyone including those who are pro-rebranding. But there again you could argue it will also be weird seeing the club debt free, having a secure future, seeing quality players signed and most of all playing in the Premier League.

OK the above is for the future, but the rebranding has to be seen in context with the whole package, not just the bit we don't like.

I think the "debt free" etc is dependant on us getting to the premier league, not the change to red. The chance to even have a shot at this seems to be (for some reason) depentant on the change.

However if any of the debt conversion takes place before promotion is assured I will be very surprised.

Earnie is one of us, and knows the score. And he's not afraid to tell the truth. :ayatollah:

If he was our first choice striker on £13K a week and £2K a goal he would be following the party line.

Tony I am a realist, but I want debt free before we kick a ball this season, and i don't care about the premiership. I feel me drifting back to the anti's every day as long as we have Sam and the debt. I do not want red and the stupid little badge but felt it would be just acceptable if we are solely owned by one entity. Still waiting....... :|

TBH with you mate you have made the most dead raving obvious comment possible stating that we need Premiership football.

The point I made was it would be just as wierd not having a specture of debt hanging over the club as much as playing in red is.
