Cardif City’s hopes of tempting hometown hero Craig Bellamy back for a second stint with the club could be under threat after new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said he would “love” him to stay.
Bellamy is rumoured to be the subject of another bid by the Bluebirds after spending the 2010/11 season with the club.
Meanwhile it is believed his old Wales manager Mark Hughes is also keen on taking the 32-year-old to Queens Park Rangers as he rebuilds his squad.
But according to reports coming out of Liverpool today, Rodgers has said he is a big admirer of Bellamy’s qualities and would only let him leave for a “unique” opportunity.
Whether that opportunity is represented in the shape of a return to South Wales remains to be seen.
Rodgers said he held “positive” talks with Bellamy this week and promised to keep in touch with the striker over his future after he joins up with Stuart Pearce’s Olympic squad.
The ex-Swansea boss told the Liverpool Echo: “I had a really positive chat with Craig on Monday.
“It was good to meet him and get his side of the Liverpool story. He’s a big supporter of this club – he loves the club.
“He’s a good guy. He has a real passion for Liverpool Football Club and that’s the type of people I want here.
“I like his intensity, his work-rate and his passion so I would love him to be here.
“He’s a player. It would take a really special and unique opportunity for Craig to walk out of Liverpool and for us to go our separate ways.
“If anything changes on that from a personal perspective then him and I will talk about that.”
Rodgers added Bellamy buys into his football philosophy but said they were yet to have a full discussion about his future, with just one year left on his contract.
“Craig is off now for the Olympics but we have promised to keep in touch,” Rodgers said.
“He’s obviously got a year left on his contract and going forward we will discuss more where he’s at.
“Craig and I had a really good chat about football in general. He has probably seen closer more than anyone at the club how I worked down at Swansea.
“He was very complimentary about that work and thinks I’ll be a perfect fit for here.”
It is thought Liverpool would want a fee if they were allow Bellamy to leave Merseyside though it is understood that could be as little as £2m.
Cardiff boss Malky Mackay has remained coy on any possible return for Bellamy, saying: “Craig is currently contracted to Liverpool and, as with any player in that situation, I don’t think it’s appropriate to talk about other club’s players.
“But if Craig decides he is going to leave Liverpool for next season and Liverpool are prepared to let him go, then clearly we’d like to talk to him.”
Bellamy returned to Liverpool on transfer deadline day last August after completing a free transfer from Manchester City.
He scored nine goals in 37 appearances last season but was restricted to just 18 starts under old boss Kenny Dalglish.
