Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers insists he is ready to keep Craig Bellamy – despite Mark Hughes joining Cardiff City in the hunt for the Wales star.

Former Wales boss Hughes wants to link up with Bellamy once more and is preparing to launch a bid to take the 32-year-old to Queens Park Rangers.

Hughes has previously worked with the frontman at club and international level with much success and is keen to hijack the Bluebirds’ hopes of bringing Bellamy back to his hometown club.

Yet it is understood Rodgers is in no mood to let the Welshman leave Anfield after initial talks between the pair earlier this week.

Bellamy is thought to be open to the idea of a return to Cardiff where he proved a huge hit as a loan star in the 2010-11 season.

He was close to joining his boyhood Bluebirds on a permanent deal last August, only to end up heading back to Liverpool following a switch from Manchester City.

But the 69-times capped striker saw his Anfield action limited and had been thought to be ready to assess his options this summer.

Cardiff have gone public with their interest of a sensational deal for Bellamy.

But they would be blown out of the water in terms of finances should Hughes opt to move having been given a bumper budget by Rangers’ Malaysian owner Tony Fernandes.

Liverpool are thought to want a fee should they opt to sell Bellamy as he has one year left on his Anfield contract.

But Rodgers will be in no rush to off-load a player who made a huge impression when he did take to the field last term and who buys into the Northern Irishman’s philosophies of playing the game.

Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay is an admirer of his former Norwich team-mate, though he has been hesitant to follow up on chief executive Alan Whiteley’s public admission of interest.

“Craig is currently contracted to Liverpool and I don’t think it’s appropriate to talk about other club’s players,” said Mackay.

I fully expect Bellamy to remain at Liverpool next season. Why would they want to let go of someone who was deemed to be one of their best players last season? They wouldn't and he would obviously fit into the system Rodgers normally players, with a target man and two quick men either side. I think City should move on to the next target.

Usually because Craig has a habit of making things awkward when he wants to leave. He has a year left so cannot understand how the greedy scouters would want a £2million fee when they bought him for not. I'm not saying he will come to us but he will want another 2 or 3 year contract and if that is in the offing at QPR he may negotiate out of Liverpool. He ain't foreign to signing on fees.

We had this problem with bellamy last season, it seems as if we have to wait in the background until all craigs avenues are exhausted, i would love to see bellamy back with us this season but malky should give him a date on when he has to make his mind up and if he can,t commit to us then we move on to other targets.

Media Wales are starting to look stupid, they are running 3 different stories.

City have virtually done a deal, up to Bells to sort out his end. WHICH I BELIEVE IS TRUE.

But QPR could snatch him from us.

Now Liverpool want to keep him.

I would say the decision Craig makes will reflect exactly what kind of attitude and person he is!
