Cardiff City star Peter Whittingham insists fans' support is vital after shirt change controversy

By Paul Abbandonato Jul 6 2012

CARDIFF CITY player of the year Peter Whittingham has told Bluebirds fans they have to get behind the new red shirts... for the sake of the team.

Malky Mackay’s Bluebirds will don the change of colours in league football for the first time when they meet Huddersfield at home in the Championship opener on August 17.

And star turn Whittingham warns any discontent from the supporters will have a knock on effect on the field of play.

Instead, he hopes Bluebirds followers will roar on the team to a decent start in what City wish to be a promotion-winning year.

“If the fans are going to be edgy it's going to be hard to take,” said Whittingham.

“A good start is always key, but this year it’s even more important. It could be massive.”

Whittingham says he plans to be around to help the Bluebirds to that blistering start, despite strong links with Premier League clubs.

Newcomers West Ham and Steve Clarke’s West Brom are amongst those tailing Whittingham.

But the midfielder is under contract to Cardiff until 2014 and told the BBC: “I’m happy here. Until the manager wants to sell me, I’m here."

Mackay says he has no intention of cashing in on Whittingham and is looking to bolster his squad.

As well as chasing Craig Bellamy, City are close to capturing Coventry defender Richard Keogh in a £750,000 deal

I can't see it happening, our fans haven't stopped moaning for years and now they even have good reason to moan.

we just wouldnt be cardiff city fans if we were content and happy
It does worry me though, atmosphere at the cardiff city stadium has been embarassing at times, the re-branding will give certain elements of our fan base another excuse to boo and hurl abuse at players and other supporters

whittingham hasn't said anything out of turn but i would prefer it if players and the manager stayed out of the red/blue debate because they move on in time so it's not their fight it's the fans who remain

i agree like i said he hasn't said anything out of turn but i still think it would be better if the players said nothing on the matter

I was thinking exactly that when reading it... Players come and go, and unless the City was their boyhood club then they surely can't feel as we do about the whole blue/red issue, and if anything it stings a little have a player telling me what I should do and how I should feel about the club I have loved for so long, even feels a bit patronising...

As loud as you can...
"We should be in blue
We should be in bluueee
We're cardiff city
We should be in blue"
We'll back the team 100%, no doubt, but we'll still have our say.

Malky and the players are only asking for the fans full support nothing wrong with coming out and saying that and the more the fans get behind the team the better the results will be on the pitch, last thing they want is the fans paying more attention to a change of colour of shirt and badge rather than matters on the pitch and getting behind Cardiff city football club
