Bluebirds miss out on Derby defender

by Paul Abbandonato, South Wales EchoJul 5 2012

CARDIFF City have missed out on a bid to land Derby captain and centre back Jason Shackell, according to reports in the East Midlands.

Check Today's Daily Deal at eBay
Malky Mackay’s Bluebirds, Leicester and Burnley are each said to have been in for the highly rated 28-year-old defender.

But Burnley are believed to be closing in on Shackell with a £1.1million offer accepted by Derby.

The Turf Moor club have funds to make signings following the £7m sale of striker Jay Rodriguez to Southampton.

Mackay has been looking at various options as he seeks to turn City into a credible promotion force in the 2012-13 campaign.

The Bluebirds boss has also been heavily linked with Coventry defender Richard Keogh, although he is facing a battle with Leeds for his services.

Derby boss Nigel Clough said of Shackell, “The interest in Jason is increasing. There are two clubs very keen on taking him.

“With every player there will come a point where an offer will be deemed good business for the club.

“We don’t want to lose Jason but if we got significant funds and it enabled us to buy a couple of players and replace him, without losing too much strength in that area, then we have to think in the real world.

“Occasionally we have to do things like that.”

Anyone else worried. We are getting snubbed right, left and center by average at best players... yet we are aiming for automatic promotion with the likes of Blackburn, Forest, Leeds, Wolves, Bolton, Blackpool, Birmingham, Leicester etc etc

why would we be worried, 5 days into the transfer window?? have we even put a bid in for the derby guy?? to me it seems as though keogh is our first choice target.

only one player has snubbed us and that was the non league guy who went to leicester... we never had a bid accepted for rodriguez so he didnt snub us as we werent in the running to start with...

forest wont be in the running for auto promotion, neither will leeds... none of us saw the mutch signing coming and i hope it will be the same with the other players we are looking at..

But these players arent top 2 material are they. Brum blamed Mutch for letting their whole side down through the whole second half of the season and as for Keogh and Lawrence :?

Keogh is a striker.

Brum fans were fuming more at the fact they were in a position where they had to sell rather than selling Mutch per se. It confirmed that their financial position was far worse than feared.

If I remember rightly, Carl said that we weren't after Shackell, although we may have made a low initial bid, we'd turned our attentions to a younger player in Richard Keogh!

If Carl is correct, then we haven't lost out, but merely pulled out and turned our attention elsewhere! :ayatollah:

average player, let us down at the end of last season and no great loss

meh

i'm more concerned about the fact that we've had to sell him than the fact that he's gone

So you pick out a quote from one Birmingham fan who doesn't care that Mutch has left them, when there were hundreds of fans posting their disappointment and disgust on their message board(s) and local rag! :?

Seems pretty pathetic to try and knock him before he's even started training for us, let alone playing for us!

That was one of many. As I said Brum fans were more annoyed that had to sell their players rather than they had to sell Mutch.

Ok, so you decided to post a Brum fan's negative thoughts, instead of any of the many hundreds of Brum fans, who had posted their disappoinment and disgust!

So it still seems pretty pathetic to try and knock him before he's even started training for us, let alone playing for us!

Its only negative if you are going into it one eyed. I see it as a realistic view not a negative or positive, after watching him a few times last season it seems the most logical view.

So to balance it up, why didn't you post any of the far more positive opinions on him, instead of a negative one, which you chose to endorse?

Again I dont see opinions as negative or positive, just realitic and unrealistic.

Its my opinion that he is average and certainly not top 2 material (hes played 3 mins for the U-21's and that was only due to a host of withdrawals). So why would I give the opposite opinion to back it up? I wanted to show that not all Bruum fans were outraged as a result of this transfer. Many dont rate him, and most were just annoyed that they were selling players... not necessarily Mutch.

Most Birmingham fans were sad to see him leave and thought that he was a great prospect and given that he is only 20 years of age, they saw him as a great prospect and the only ones who have come out and slagged him off, are bitter because he didn't necessarily have to leave!

The vast majority of their fans were gutted, not because they had to sell, but because they were prepared to state the truth and accept that they had lost a good future prospect, where as you have chosen to slag him off, before he's even kicked a ball for us! :?

Cardiff are only interested in bringing in one defender in the near future, and it isn't shackell......

You have no idea how much he was sold for, the same as myself, but figures quoted in the press range from £900,000 rising to £3 million with add ons to £2 million in total!

However, you still haven't answered why you've chosen to write off our new signing, before he's even kicked a ball for us! :?

It was 800k with 300k add ons. The add on will only be triggered if we gain promotion.

So does this mean you are a jack then

Given that you said we'd paid around £800,000 for him, that link disagrees with you, as it gives his value at £1.1 million to £1.25 million, which is their own current valuation and doesn't take into account the future prospects of a 20 year old under 21 England International, whose value could well soar with a successful season under his belt!

I ask again though, why did you feel the need to slag him off, before he's even kicked a ball for us?
