Best LOCAL DERBYS

Wed Jul 04, 2012 1:58 am

DERBY GAMES, are the ones I love watching. Nowhere else you can feel the intensity and passion by football fans for their clubs better, than when they face their local rivals.

with the new football season coming soon, I thought I list the big derby games/rivalries in germany on here. Mentioned it before a while ago, but as some of you like groundhopping while abroad (like myself), it could be interesting to add a derby game to your trip. So I copied my existing list of derby days and added the more important ones to it:

the "Ruhrpott Derby" between SCHALKE and DORTMUND...
biggest German derby, massive hype around it, and as both clubs are well supported all over the country you feel the build-up in footballing communities/pubs etc up and down the land...
it used to be a very violent one as well, with the Schalke "Gelsen-Szene" and the "Borussenfront" were amongts the top firms in Germany, size-wise and very active... asits always asellout game at both grounds, you need good connections to get a ticket or bookyour trip very early.

Hamburg Derby between HAMBURGER SV and FC ST.PAULI
both are Hamburg teams, but they couldnt be more different. HSV stand for the establishment of rich merchants and it's support comes from the middle and upperclass and some (right wing) working class of Hamburg's subburbs, while ST.PAULI draw their support from the borough of the same name and working class people from all over Hamburg. St.Pauli supporters are called Zecken (Ticks), due to their left-wing political views, very much anti-fascist and alternative in it's views. e.g. they work very closely together with their fans and local community, their head of stadium security is a former punk-rocker who used to organise awaytrips and was the editor of a fanzine in the 80s and 90s... up until today it can be quiete violent on derby-days, HSV can still pull big numbers.

the NORTHERN DERBY between HAMBURGER SV and WERDER BREMEN
a very intense rivalry on and off the pitch, havent been to one but heard it can be very rough, with a young Bremen supporter once got killed. Both Cities dislike each other, Bremen much more relaxed than Hamburg, who claim to be the #1 in the North of Germany

NIEDERSACHEN DERBY between HANNOVER 96 and EINTRACHT BRAUNSCHWEIG
both being traditional clubs and heavily supported, a trip to Braunschweig is one of those trips you can expect trouble. Notorious firm and very active up to this day...
Hannover are a big club, not as active as they were but still quiete tasty...

NIEDERSACHEN DERBY #2 between HANNOVER 96 and VfL Wolfsburg
Hannover being the #1 club in lower saxony, but Wolfsburg with its backing from Volkswagen were more successful in playing football over the last decade. Supporters-wise, 96 is far superior to Wolfsburg, derby games are intense and noisy but not a lot of fighting outside their grounds anymore.

ROSTOCK and ST.PAULI Derby
Hansa Rostock being a notorious former East-German club, whose supporters (up to this day) are know for being racist and into right-wing politics, so a derby game against St.Pauli of Hamburg is a fixture which always explodes and where it kicks off every time they play.

PREUSSEN MUENSTER v OSNABRUECK

big derby game in the 3.liga, they share a traditional rivalry, which can be violent to this day, as Ultras of both clubs try to get to each other. Planning to do one myself, as I always had a softspot for Preussen, who are a very traditional club with a lot of history

PREUSSEN MUENSTER v ARMINIA BIELEFELD

pretty simular to the Muenster/Osnabrueck rivalry. they simply hate each other...

Frankenderby between 1.FC NUERNBERG and FUERTH
fans of both clubs have been waiting for this one for a long time, they only met twice in the last 20 or 30 years in division 3 in the 90s. Now, as Fuerth clinched promotion to the bundesliga, they face each other in the topflight for the first time in history. the rebellious green and white underdogs of Fuerth against the mighty "Club" of Nuernberg. Very tasty derby, I expect Nuernberg's big turnout to terrorize Fuerth, tbh.

Munich-Derby between FC BAYERN and TSV 1860 MUNICH

the reds vs the blues... massive inner city derby, Bayern are the biggest German club, but funny enough within Munich 1860 (the lions) are massive and a lot bigger than their counterparts... 1860 is also the more traditional club, coming from the working classes whilst Bayern are quiete posh, due to their success...
it is not very violent today tho (it was in the 70s and 80s), as now both teams share the same firm, who are mostly 1860 lads who travel with Bayern on European trips. This started in the 90s, when 1860 were in non.league and they had no opposition to play with...

Rhein-Derby between 1.FC KOELN (Cologne) and BAYER LEVERKUSEN
both cities are just 10 mins apart from each other, Cologne were always the bigger side in support (and violence), Leverkusen small but tidy...

another Rhein-Derby between 1.FC KOELN and FORTUNA DUESSELDORF

massive fixture as not just both sets of fans but both cities share a big rivalry. used to be very violent in the 70s, 80s and 90s, but they dont play that often nowadays.

Rhein-Derby #3 betwenn FORTUNA DUESSELDORF and BORUSSIA MOENCHENGLADBACH

much quieter nowadays, used to be one of the top games in the 80s... we'll see what happens this season, as Fortuna gtot promoted to the Bundesliga recently. could be tasty...

Main Derby between KICKERS OFFENBACH and EINTRACHT FRANKFURT
the 2 cities are just divided by the Main-River, Offenbach a working class City with Frankfurt being the posh "Diva from the Main"... not just a footballing hatred between those, I know Offenbach people who were refused entry in Frankfurt air-raid shelters during the war. Frankfurt's firm and supporters used to be involved with right wing politics in the 70s and 80s, so Offenbach's fans (up to this day) love to rub it in that 8 of the 12 club founders of Eintracht Frankfurt were Jews... much like Spurs, Frankfurt are called the Yids...
used to be a very violent derby-game, as Frankfurt always had a massive turnout, Offenbach's ASF (Anti-Social-Front) were much smaller in numbers, but more active and notorious. amongst German football fans, Offenbach was voted for as the most unpleasant away trip for away fans, some even called them the "Millwall of Germany"... but, as the ASF is almost non-existent, its noisy and Ultra dominated, with Frankfurt having the largest Ultra group in germany.

FRANKFURT v MAINZ

less than 30 mins drive from each other, this derby regularely explodes. Frankfurt with a bad trackrecord of violence, usually tend to rampage on their way to and away from Mainz. The rivalry started only a few years ago, Frankfurt never took Mainz seriously, but all of the sudden the red-whites became more successful than Eintracht, which encouraged Frankfurt supporters to show who is the #1 in the region. It has developed into one of the better derby games on the german calender

SUEDWEST DERBY between 1.FC KAISERSLAUTERN and MAINZ
they both come from Rheinland-Pfalz, Kaiserslautern is a very traditional and well supported club in germany, whilst Mainz only arrived in pro footie 20 years ago. Mainz being the federal capital of Rheinland-Pfalz, Kaiserslautern feels Mainz are more favoured by politicians in giving them financial backing, while Kaiserslautern struggle financially since a few years. Big turnout from both sides for this derby.

SUEDWEST DERBY between 1.FC KAISERSLAUTERN and WALDHOF MANNHEIM
...was once of the most violent derby games in the German calender... they share a hatred for each other which is beyond, but as Mannheim even dropped to the 7th league, they havent played for over a decade now... altho I cant stand neither of them, I would love to attend one derby between those two one day...

Hessenderby OFFENBACH v DARMSTADT
traditional rivalry between those two cities, as Frankfurt is Offenbachs main rival, Darmstadt concentrate on Offenbach. IMO Darmstadt have a minority complex, seeing themselves as bigger as they are... canT stand the c**ts myself, very tasty derby games between OFC and Darmstadt

OFFENBACH v MANNHEIM
as both clubs share a heavy rivalry and are only sepereated by 45 mins on the autobahn, this derby is explosive. 1999 this encounter at Offenbachs ground, was (until then) the most violent derby match in German history, having the police using watercannons after the match to clear the streets to let mannheim and their allies from Frankfurt out of the ground again.
have a look yourself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGyaalNPvOY, I remember it well, it started during the match inside the ground and offenbach went into the Mannheim section, met there by a combined frankfurt and mannheim firm. it kicked off big time, match was stopped for 20 mins and after the game offenbach blocked the exits, trying to get to the visitors. it took the OB over 3 hours to restore order again...
it was also one of the last big turnouts for Offenbach, as many of them got nicked and served time inside, so the ASF is basically history now...

BADEN/SCHWABEN DERBY between KARLSRUHER SC and VFB STUTTGART
still is a heavily policed fixture, both clubs represent not just their cities but also their regions, which dislike each other a lot. both clubs have a firm, but also very active and violent Ultras, and even the scarfers from both sides of the divide absolutely hate each other... been to one once, one of the most intense derby-games I have been to....

Berlin-Derbys: HERTHA BSC / UNION BERLIN / BFC DYNAMO BERLIN
Hertha being the big west berlin side, Union and Dynamo coming from the east. They all hate each other nowadays, Hertha and Union used to get on really well some years ago, but thats history. Union can certainly pull good numbers, Herthas turnout (still) can be massive, while Dynamo has very few supporters, but I'd say 80% of their fans are actually casuals/hooligans.
this is a short video of the violent Dynamo v Union from 2006 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRgIHJTju_g
Union and Dynamo started their rivalry during the GDR years in east-germany, even then they fought streetbattles with each other.

Sachsenderby DYNAMO DRESDEN / VFB LEIPZIG /SACHSEN LEIPZIG / CHEMNITZ / ZWICKAU etc

all nuts, they all despise each other... their rivalries also began during the communist years, mostly local rivalries, except the inner Leipzig Derby between VFB (former Lok Leipzig) and Sachsen, with VFB traditionally being right wing and Sachsen being lefties.

Thueringer Derby between CARL-ZEISS JENA and ERFURT

very traditional local derby, due to the rivalry of both cities, its reflecting on and off the pitch as well. both passionate about their clubs and simular in their support.

another Ruhrpott Derby between DORTMUND and BOCHUM
being located so close to each other, clubs in the Ruhr region traditionally share strong rivalries with each other. Bochum considers Dortmund as their main rival (altho disliking Schalke as well). Big turnouts for games expected, make sure u got a ticket before you travel.

and another one, between SCHALKE and ESSEN
being seperated by a 15min footwalk, they traditionally share an intense and violent rivalry. Schalke pulling big numbers while Essen has a much smaller turnout, but very tasty and up for everything. havent been to one of those matches, but I have met Essen with Offenbach a few times, and Essen is still prob one of the most game sides in the country.

edit: the Leipzig Derby, got confused with the names of VFB/Lok Leipzig. They used to be Lok Leizig, then renamed to VFB and later renamed to Lok again... also Sachsen used to be called BSG Chemie, and they mainly draw their support from Leutzsch borough...forgot to mention that

would be interesting to watch a derby abroad
i see a few of the cockney derbies in 90's didn't to seem as evil as ours 80's early 90's but the game had changed

A really bizarre one-the Cardigan Derby. St Dogmaels v Maesglas. About 20 years ago i was visiting my gran in Aberaeron and watched the Cardiganshire League Cup Final which is played on Aberaeron's Alban Square Pitch. The hate on both sides was immense-2 local council estates against one one another. Fighting in pubs and on pitch between players.

Another tasty one a few years ago was Bangor v Caernarfon. More recently Bangor v Rhyl kicked off on the teraces.

Treforest FC Vs Graig FC in the amature league.

You find a better following of supporters in the welsh division over the Graig lot. Never well behaved though but sing all through games with banners and flags!
