Ive been following the Berjaya Group Share Price and would hardly refer to them as "troubled".
Like any Company the Berjaya Group has been hit by the Worldwide recession. However in a recent statement they reported that their revenue from ongoing operations was 1,809 Million Malaysion Ringits as opposed to 1,754 Million the year before - representing an increase.
The share price has decreased, although not by much, and that could be attributed to a solid business that is holding its own against a weak share market.

The article is 12 years old, so not exactly relevant to anything today, apart from the fact it indicates he has a far stronger business empire than he did then.
Tan was hardly alone in terms of being heavily impacted by the Asian financial crisis in 2000.
