A few short years ago, just prior to the coming of Sam Hammam, I would sit in the Ninian Park stand on match day holding friendly wagers with my sons on the attendance at the approaching kick-off time.

Being an optimist I would always bet on the figure exceeding 4,000. Needless to say I lost more than I won as attendances between 2,500 and 4,500 were the norm. Those were the days when bumper crowds only featured for a Boxing Day game or the visit of the old enemy.
Those were the days when a succession of owners tore their hair out attempting to attract people into the virtually empty match day stands.
Fast forward those few short years and I am amazed at how many thousands of “life long faithful supporters” are venting their fury at the new shirt change. Many of these “life long faithfuls” supported City only through reading the daily and Sunday newspapers and would have had no idea of the team colours had they not been aware of the nickname Bluebirds.
In those not so far-off days of the missing thousands, many excuses were made to avoid attending, the biggest of which from these so called arm chair supporters was; “I’ll never watch the City, they have no ambition, I stopped going when they sold John Toshack”.
The few of us who did turn up at Ninian Park in those dark days wouldn’t have cared what colour we played in provided it attracted a few more people through the turnstiles and true supporters, apart from genuine feelings of nostalgia, should not insist on making the colour change so emotive. We have not supported blue all these years, we’ve supported Cardiff City
