Team GB's Millennium Stadium clash with Uruguay a sell-out
By Aled Blake, WalesOnlineJun 21 2012

Cardiff's Millennium Stadium
Team GB’s Olympic football game at the Millennium Stadium is a sell-out, officials have confirmed.

The marquee football match in Cardiff will see Team GB take on Uruguay at the Welsh national ground on August 1.

It provides South Wales football fans with the mouth-watering prospect of watching the likes of Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan take on Ryan Giggs, Gareth Bale and Craig Bellamy for Team GB, who will be managed by ex-England international Stuart Pearce.

There had been concerns the Olympic football earmarked for the Millennium stadium would be a damp squib. But the news that only some “contingency tickets” could be made available later this summer allays those fears.

However, there remains a question mark over attendances for the other matches at the city centre ground, with London 2012 not giving away details on sales figures for the remaining games earmarked for the Millennium Stadium.

A London 2012 spokesman said: “There is currently no availability for the Team GB v Uruguay match. There may be a few more contingency tickets made available, but we expect a full house. There is still availability for all other matches at the Millennium Stadium.”

The Millennium Stadium will also host Brazil v Egypt on July 26.

Great Britain’s women’s team – managed by Hope Powell – will kick off the Olympics against New Zealand in the opening event of the Games at 4pm on July 25.

At the same venue and around an hour after that game finishes, Cameroon will take on Brazil. Many of the stadia across Britain will stage back-to-back fixtures as part of a package price.

Tickets to all of the matches start at £20 for adults, with special prices available for people under 16 and over 60 at many matches. General sale tickets go up to £40.

To date, fewer than 20,000 tickets have been sold for the opening fixture, leaving most of the huge 74,500-seater ground empty.

Senior figures in the capital have previously voiced concerns that tens of thousands of empty seats will be highly embarrassing for Wales and Cardiff.

There has been some criticism that organisers have concentrated so much on London that other venues have been forgotten.

Team GB’s men’s team will also play games at Old Trafford in Manchester and Wembley Stadium in north London.

Sell out my ar@e! They've given thousands of tickets free to schools throughout Wales and probably Scotland and England. Fact, 40 tickets arrived through the post this week, not ordered I might add. The only ones who have sold out here are the stupid Welsh players who have signed up for this Mickey Mouse competition and put our national teams at risk.

I've got tickets to the quarter finals as I couldn't make this match. Hopefully Team GB will make it to the quarters as top of their group.

They should do considering the talent in the squad. :ayatollah:

I think it's like a half of a BLUE union Jack. It's not the shirt that Bale and Ramsey were pictured in.

Really looking forward to it. A quick question, what will everyone do when the anthems are played? Will they be boo'ed, sung, or silence?

If going to watch Team GB then supporting them = honour the anthem, at least if not a fan of "God Save The Queen', should stand in silence!

I definitely won't be singing it, i'm Welsh after all. I don't see why it should be boo'ed, but inevitably somebody will
