Malky Mackay reveals in-depth summer transfer plans

Tue Jun 19, 2012 11:43 pm

MALKY Mackay has outlined his meticulous summer transfer policy aimed at avoiding planting a “time bomb” in the Bluebirds’ dressing room.

The City boss is currently looking to build his squad ahead of the next Championship campaign which starts with the visit of Huddersfield on August 18.

After securing a play-off place in his first season in charge in the Welsh capital, Mackay is looking to go one step further this time and finally secure Premier League promotion for his side.

Following the club’s controversial rebranding plans, with Cardiff playing at home in red shirts this campaign instead of the traditional blue, Mackay is being supported in the transfer market by the club’s Malaysian backers.

Indeed, the City boss has already admitted his is ‘delighted’ by the funds at his disposal this summer.

So far only goalkeeper Joe Lewis has joined Cardiff after becoming a free agent when his contract came to an end at Peterborough.

But Mackay has been busy trying to add to his signings with attempts to land strikers Jamie Vardy, Jay Rodriguez and Bjorn Sigurdarson all ending in frustration as they joined other clubs.

But Mackay has vowed he will not panic and insist he is prepared to wait all the way until the transfer window closes on August 31 if it means landing the players he really wants.

And the Cardiff boss has revealed the lengths he will go to in a bid to identify the right players to join his Bluebirds’ squad.

It is not just about the player’s performance on the pitch for Mackay and his staff.

The characters and backgrounds of potential recruits are also examined with former and current colleagues in the football world sounded out to see if they might fit into Mackay’s way of doing things.

A dossier is built up on each transfer target covering all potential angles.

Mackay believes it is the only way to sustain the unity he wants within the Cardiff dressing room with the no-nonsense Scot insisting one rotten apple could ruin everything he is trying to build at the club.

“We produce dossiers on every player we want to sign,” said Mackay.

“Within that there is one page on the player’s personality and lifestyle. You have to have as much as you can on that because if you get that wrong, well, good luck to you.

“One time bomb in the dressing room can corrupt the whole place.

“If you can bring in people who look after each other, who discipline each other then you have a better chance of achieving what you want to achieve.

“The fact is you have a much better chance of doing well if you don’t have people inside working against what you are trying to do.

“You have a much better chance of sticking together and coming together as a team.

“Personally I believe you owe that to your the football club. The players owe it to the football club who pay them and to the fans who pay good money to watch them. As far as I’m concerned they have to be respectful.”

With every signing since he arrived at the club, little more than a year ago, Mackay has been following his philosophy to the letter.

It is the same process he will follow this summer.

One of the most important elements Mackay admits is to speak to people who know the player well.

For Mackay the clinching factor is simple, any new signing expecting to play for his team must respect the club, the club’s staff, the club’s fan and their fellow players.

“Respect and manners should be a given, no matter what profession you are in,” added Mackay.

“If you have respect for fellow players, the staff, the supporters and you work to become a better player then, in my experience, that will all come back to you in a positive way.

“We will speak to coaches and managers, get to somebody who has played alongside the player we are interested in. Often it’s somebody I know.

“They may say, ‘don’t touch him’ or they might say, ‘absolutely take him’.

“The 10 players we brought in last summer we spoke to fellow players and colleagues and all of those we spoke to were saying, ‘yes, sign them’.

“That will be the exact same case with the additions we make this summer.”

Malky hasn't signed any crap players so far (in my opinion) so i'm happy for him to go about his own way of transfers. Rather get another Aron Gunnarrson then another Ndumbu Nsungu...

I admire the patience but hes missing the factor of going into a season and still bringing players in.
Id love to see his passion and desire to bring players in, lack of determanation.
Needs to stop openly talking abot transfers and bring them in and get on with it.

"No way... no dossier, no deal!"

Makes sense to me, in any walk of life if you have a group of people who all sing from the same hymn sheet then that group will be a group who will pull for each other no matter what, stick an arsewipe in amongst them and whoops there goes the apple cart. How many of us have had experiences working with a guy/woman who's a first class tit? I certainly have. I'm happy that Malky is checking out what makes these players tick and come the start of the season our team will be made up of players who respect each other and will pull together as a team.

All of the above is expected.

Although I am worried when I read " Even if we have to wait until the Deadline on August 31st"
That tells me we are no closer to signing anyone at the moment.

Last year I went for this job.

I have my 1st interview
Then did a presentation to them
Then another informal interview.
At that point, I was told the job was nine and we only needed to agree what money they were offering and what money I valued the job at.
Then another formal interview.
Then I came in for a psychometric test and interview

Then I told them - I didn't wish to be considered.

To me - the whole process was time consuming and ultimately off putting.
It left me thinking that it could be a shite place to work.

They since employed someone else - with half the skill and experience and actually call me in now to do specialist work for them!

There is a moral for Malky here I think. Innovation and quality don't always come in the same packages as industry and percieved loyalty.

Don't talk about it - Do it

" malky is prepared to wait all the way until the transfer window closes" heard that before as well...

players need to be brought in early in my opinion, settled in, pre season under them not 3 weeeks into the start of a campaign after 3 or 4 difficult games...

stop being unrealistic with targets and we wont be losing out to clubs.. if they dont want to spend the cash, you could easily construct a decent team out of all the released players...

Malky Mackay isn't going to shout out from the rooftops about who he is looking at, if you look at last season he brought in 10 players in quick succession and delivered us a season that we could be proud of having only a team consisting of 10 players when he took over.

Patience does pay off !!, it seems that people are looking for knee jerk reaction signings just to make themselves feel a bit more comfortable with this re-branding issue or to show the Malaysians are keeping their promises. Malky got it right last season with recruitment and with the backing he has now it will be an even better summer this time around. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Oh dear me.... It seems the excuses have started already.... I truly hope he isn't preempting his press releases for the end of August when once again we've managed to sign no one of any real quality..... I get a nasty feel things are going to turn very sour very soon.....

Same old from the club last week we had MM bigging up earnie ffs yet sat in the stands for 85% of the season not even making the bench, the week before it was how we lost on on they guy to saint and the other guy to wolves i could go on for about 8weeks so afar every week its a MM press release TO WHY WE FAILED or what hes doing now  same as last season anyway carl says (as the club told him) we got big money to spend on here so watch this space :ayatollah:

i disagree, dont think we got it right at all... he brought in enough players on a free to make a team, but the squad lacked depth. had ample opps to bolster the squad, during transfer windows, loan windows etc... but failed at all opportunities.

Unbelievable some of the comments on here ! Its all so easy on football/championship manager.

The club pays the Manager handsomely to do a job. He has put a system in place to deliver players who fit into the vision and system, we need to be patient and let the process work. Do we want more Cowies and Gunnarson's or Parkins and Twaio's ?

none of the above to be honest....

we lacked pace and creativity since the start.. had ample opps to sort it out and failed.. we need to get players in with the pace and quality as soon as.. other wise if we wait until the 31 aug as malky has done in every transfer window to no avail. we will have played 4 games , against, huddersfield, brighton, bristol city and wolves.. 4 tough games with the same team that finished last season...

we need to bring the players in, get them a full pre season or the excuse will be, " they havnt had a a full pre season " teams are bringing in players already.. as they like us have identifed their targets and postional needs and responded by securing the deal..
we take to long, miss out, move on to another, miss out again, then miss out again until all our intial targets have moved else where leaving us no option but to wait to the last minute incase something else crops up...

every transfer/loan window, we here the same, have patience for god sake, window is open for ages, then it slams shut on our fingers and we wait with anticipation until the next window for the same to happen..

If anyone had replied to this i do apologize but i feel i must have my say when this spiteful nonsense is spoken.

MM has done a magnificent job since being at the club, he has got players in that are for the future and used very little loans when getting to the position that we ended up in the playoffs last year. Mason, rudy and kiss are 3 players that have had 1 year in this league, the way that they have developed over the last year has been amazing in my personal view.

MM has also come out and said that this is his ethos and he won't sign "bad apples" at this club regardless of who they are on more than one occasion, so to say that it is an excuse is completely un believable. MM has said that the money has been there and yes we have a small squad but the fact of the matter is that the players who were available are not up to the the standards MM expects.

Just may i ask who are you tell MM what to do? Have you taken a club with less than 12 first team pros at the time he took over to the carling up final and 5th in the division ? If MM can get what happened last year with starting with that then i think he knows what he is doing. Imagine what he can do if gets a full team of players like he has this year? This is a public forum so it may be your opinion but please could you refrain form talking utter shit while logged in. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Um, you do realise that most players are actual on holiday at the moment don't you?! So even if a deal is close to being signed, it won't go through until that player is back from holiday/July 1st. If it wasn't for MM and his dossier(s) last season, we would have been struggling with relagation.

Some of the comments on here really shock me to be honest, grow up and stop playing so much football manager.
