Working Tax Credits

Sat Jun 16, 2012 9:16 pm

Hi all,

Hope you're having a good night.

Just want to ask a little question.

Myself and the missus have got a 3 year old son and have never claimed any benefits etc as we're both working full time and didn't realise we were entitled to any.

However someone said we should apply and for the past month my missus has been received £62 a week in working tax credits and I've been receiving £90 a week!!!

Our annual joint income is around £37,000 and our mortage is about £700 a month, the amount of money we're receiving in working tax credits seems too good to be true, as it's a hell of a lot of cash.

Does this sound normal, or is it all going to be taken away from us?

Any help is greatly appreciate to put my mind at ease!

Yeh the calculator says we're not entitled to anything, was kind of hoping someone in a similar situation to us, would say we are.

sounds like because you have only been having that amount lately its been backdated! now this lot in government have reduced the figure from £45000 to £26000. if you earn anything over that you get nothing

I think you are getting too much there...and THEY will claim it back!!

Get them to re-assess your entitlement

I tell u what if anyone has never claimed its worth taking a punt...

cos you WILL get back dated... takes 6 weeks but your looking at a nice holiday in august, they will back date 6 months,
but apparently theirs a legal loop hole if you put it in writing you can back date 10 years.... (or more)

you could be looking at thousands of pounds

Most you can backdate is 3 months.

Give then a ring to check over the details they have about u are correct. If they find at a later date ur being over paid u will end up without that amount and paying that amou to them each month. I think the income ur on is about what it equals to what u would get on a lower income. Some of it may be child tax though which u should get.

going on what you earn jointly,I'm surprised you're having anything, this sounds way too much to me mate, best check it out...

Re: Working Tax Credits

Is it tax credits or working tax credits. They are different and come in one payment. Best to ask them to check it out as they will ask for it back. The whole system is a nightmare. If you can afford to put it aside in savings for a year then do so. If after the assessment next year they don't ask for it back and your still entitled to receive money for the next year then you should be ok to spend. We were asked to pay back £10,000 a few years ago, honest truth, which we were paid in error entirely due to their mistake. I complained and they didn't pursue but still now live in fear that they someday will

From your message it sounds as though ur claiming seperately, instead jointly,as you have a joint income ov 37k u should not be getting anything ,but at most it would be something like 10 a week depending on circumstances,my advice to u is to phone them and explain that u think ur being overpaid and let them take it from there, they will claim it back once they realise the error! If u do phone them to correct the issue and they still keep paying you the money then when they try to claim the money back you can dispute it as you have tried to rectify the situation via telephone calls,as long as u keep a log of the calls and whom u spoke to ,u shouldnt have to pay the funds back!

If I were you double check Monday if it's a mistake you will have to pay it all back

Sounds an awful lot to be honest, maybe you are also getting child benefit besides being back dated.

Im in a similair position to you. Our joint annual incomes (before tax) are £45k.

We used to get £80 a month child benefit and £40 a month tax credit when we had one child. We now get £135 a month child benefit for 2 kids but no longer get any working tax credit as the threshold was dropped to 40k last year.

The whole system needs a reform as the cuts theyve made have ended up penalising the average earning working class

Be careful as if they overpay they expect it back.

bloody hell mate,i'm not being disrespectful to you in any way, and good luck if you're getting extra cash of the gov't, but another reason why this country is f##ked is that you are having ANY benefits at all when you earn that sort of money between the two of you...

Re: Working Tax Credits

Dont agree sorry. We pay in nearly a 1000 a month in tax and NI and get 135 back so still contribute over 850 a month to the state. Im in just above the average pay in the uk and my missus is on 6k less.

Theres cretins who are paying f**k all in and taken over 26k out cos the government has made it so cosy for them there is no advantage working. They want a working class lifestyle without the f*cking work.

Thats not to mention little things like they can get like free school dinners, free gym, free classes for the kids.etc. etc. which us average folk have to find.

They and thats the reason the countrys fucked but as per the average joes such as myself get penalised.

you should be entitled to some but if you call up they will be able to tell you in minutes if you can.

also on the morgage front im an independent broker so if you want me to look and see if theres any way i can get the £700 cheaper id be happy to ;)

please note, I said ANOTHER reason...the two of you earn just under £900 a week before stoppages, that's a bloody fortune, so imo you should not be receiving any benefits...good luck to you...I'm jealous...

I wouldnt call 600 a week after weve stoppages to fund the workshy cunts a 'bloody fortune' for a family of 4. Not in 2012.

600 a week each and then maybe id agree with you.

Agreed :D

Tbh its the families with one parent hard working on say 10-14k a year I feel most sorry for. They are worse off than those who dont work.

Id rather my contributions helped them more than the work shy system playing bastards.
