£40 million!!

Sat Jun 16, 2012 11:08 am

Thats how much it costs us tax payers to keep the english royal family enjoying their work free and care free life whilst people continue to die from starvation all over the world and the amount of homeless people in Britain increases on a daily basis.
Value for money??………it just cannot be justified - but feel free whilst respecting my opinion to try and justify spending that amount of money being given to one family and the other 'hangers-on' parasites that suck money out of all of us and give us nothing in return.

You have to respect others opinions - perhaps you missed that bit? ---They do not benefit tourism in Wales one bit.

Go on the british tourism site and show me a Royal buildings that make money. Windsor palace no 8.

Now, are u saying that if we get rid of royals no tourists would ever come to UK?? sorry buddy, quite the opposite! Imagine we behead them all tomorrow, imagine the tourists coming to visit then! All the royal palaces would be fully opened and not mostly closed off as is now and uk would make a fortune.

Tourism arguement is a non starter im afraid.

You are not looking at the big picture

Tourists coming to stay in hotels and spending money in the country whilst here are pumping money into the economy.

Yes some of the tourists would be coming anyway but an awful lot come with the main reason being the Royals.

they dont come to see the royals, they come to see the royal houses and palaces! u dont think theres a long line of people shaking the queens hand everyday. The tourists would flood from afar if we got rid, one of the last monarchies.....as i said hardly any of their palaces r open at the moment.....they all would be if they were gone, thus more people per day can get to see them

The Queen - Elizabeth Windsor - has a personal fortune of around £1.9 billion. This fluctuates up and down with each year that passes. She personally owns Balmoral castle and Sandringham palace - neither the state nor the 'Crown' owns them.

The Crown owns other palaces such as Buckingham and St James'. However these are reserved for the exclusive use of the queen and her family, and so in effect are her private property for the duration of her life or until she abdicates. She is not allowed to sell them, however (Boo hoo).

The Crown owns a vast area of the UK called the Duchy of Lancaster. This generates an income of about £20 million a year which is the private property of Queen Elizabeth Windsor to do with as she wishes (so long as she remains the Sovereign). If this country were a republic, this income would belong to the state.

Similarly, her son Prince Charles personally owns the £16.5 million income from the Duchy of Cornwall. In a republic this income would also belong to the state.

The Queen also personally owns a wide range of investments and other assets which generate a further income of millions of pounds a year.

The Queen is paid £7.9 million a year by the state to do her job. A lot of this money is spent on paying her staff's wages at her various palaces and offices. £350,000 of this is paid to her husband as an annual salary for doing his essential work of walking around, shaking hands, and making racist jokes. The rest she spends on herself and her daily or official activities in one way or another, or on food and other such expenses.

Under new arrangements brought in by the Tories the above payment will be proportionately linked to the profits of the Crown Estate, rather than capped at a certain sum. Profits from the Estate are predicted to double or triple in future years due to investments in offshore wind power (The entire seabed around the UK belongs to the Crown Estate). Thus the queen's payments will similarly increase.

The state also gives the queen about £30 million a year (through two 'gifts in aid') to pay for the maintenance of her palaces and to cover her travel expenses, just to make sure that she doesn't have to dip into her own pockets for such things.

Furthermore the state spends an estimated £100 million a year on policing and security for the Queen and the royal family.

On top of all these payments, the state also pays for the expenses of Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and other royals in their various official capacities. Prince Andrew also holds a separate position as a trade envoy for the UK. In 2011 he spent £620,000 of taxpayer's money in this capacity.

Princes William (28) and Harry (26) already have personal fortunes of £43 million each. They will in future inherit the incomes of the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall, etc.

Adding all of the above payments together, one reaches a sum of approximately £176 million per year (comprised of money both spent by the state, and of lost income that would otherwise belong to the state), dedicated to maintaining the Queen and her immediate family.

Taken as a whole, the resources spent on maintaining the monarchy in its current form totally eclipse the sums spent on the presidents and ceremonial heads of state of republican nations. France, Italy, and the USA have greater incomes generated by tourism than the UK, despite having no ruling monarchs. The argument for the monarchy in this respect is therefore demonstrably invalid.

Verdict: the UK monarchy is a rip off, and should either be thoroughly reformulated or else done away with altogether.

Equivalent of 75p per person, per YEAR (6p per month, just over 1p per week)

Let's get some perspective here.

Who should really be 'getting some perspective'? That equates to a significant amount of money which could be better spent on housing, education, helthcare and so on.

A dire generalisation. I learnt Welsh to a high standard in school, and am pleased that our country promotes its own language. Guess what? I'm not a nationalist.

Almost as dire a genetalisation as Rugby League is played by handicapped Northerners.
