Hmm interesting 1 hour after posting the question and not a single reply.

I would have thought with all the furore over the proposed rebranding someone would have shown an interest in why the club colours have been Blue & White. :?

Gary, All I know and care about is that when I started following City they were the Bluebirds and they played in Blue and thats all I know and love.

Does every Liverpool/Rochdale fan know why they play in their colours ?

When Riverside A.F.C. was formed in 1899, the club used a chocolate brown and gold checkered shirt. Since the club became known as Cardiff City F.C. in 1908 their Home Colours have consisted of a blue shirt and white or blue shorts and socks. However for the first nine years black socks were used. In 1919 Cardiff reverted to blue socks with a white hoop. In 1926 Cardiff used a turquoise blue with a white collar, until 1930 when the darker blue was re-introduced. In 1936 the club adopted white sleeves proven popular by Arsenal F.C.. For the next 20 years the club rarely changed their kit, just swapping between white and blue sleeves.

Agreed in 1908 the club changed to Blue Shirts which lets face it was a big change from Brown and Amber quarters.

Why?

You misunderstand Annis I'm asking why did the club change colours back in 1909. Vincent Tan wasn't around back then ;) Bartley Wilson was the driving force behind our club.

:ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Because of Lord Ninian :ayatollah:

Absolutely right back then the new ground, in fact the first ground owned by the club, was only completed because Lord Ninian Crichton-Stuart stood guarantor for all costs associated with building the stadium. Lord Ninian Crichton-Stuart was the 2nd son of the then 3rd Marquis of Bute and the club decided in appreciation of the enormous financial support he gave the club during the building of the stadium to name it after him.

That was the way the club decided to show it's gratitude and for me it was a great way of doing it.

Now back to the question of why the club changed colours. :?

So why did the fans wear the riverside colours in protest against Ridsdale ?

I don't believe it's that although it's a good guess :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

During the early and formative years of our club there were two outstanding gestures made to our club. The second was when Lord Ninian Crichton-Stuart stood guarantor for the complete construction costs of the Stadium and the club showed it's appreciation by naming the stadium in his honour.

But there was another fantastic gesture made to the club by the 3rd Marquis of Bute, father of Lord Ninian, when he offered the club a parcel of land on which the stadium would be built. That parcel of land was mainly waste land and allotments positioned between railway sidings and what we know as Sloper Road. Without this gift no stadium could have been built and as the club later went on to name the ground after his son, Lord Ninian, how do you think the club would have shown it's gratitude ? as surely it would.

Would it have changed colours and if so would Blue & White have any meaning to the Marquessate of Bute :?

Great question which I think was something to do with the Man Utd fans doing the green and yellow protest against the Glazers.

Not sure but I think it was sort of copying that.

Isn't the Marquessate of Bute your avatar Castleblue? Good thread by the way :ayatollah:

Yes, isn't your avatar their crest and so presumably the change was to reflect the involvement with the club.

Yes it is, the Avatar that is, and do you think there is anything on that crest that could be used to show the clubs apprecitation for the fantastic gift of the land Ninian Park was built on.

Many think that our Blue shirts relate to "The Bluebird" play which was on stage at the New Theatre in April 1911 but Cardiff City introduced the Blue and White playing strip two years earlier around the time the 3rd Marquis of Bute offered the parcel of wasteland on which Ninian Park was built.

Is this a coincidence or does it demonstrate our club has a tradition of showing gratitude and appreciation to major financial benefactors. If the answer to that question is yes then how do you think the club and fans from 1910 would look to thank VT for his financial support.

Re: Does Anyone Know Why

We changed because we quickly realised that chocolate and orange was f*cking disgusting.
If we happened to change to salmon pink with Gooseberry trim and called ourselves the Numptyfucks then we would celebrate that too.
The reasons are irrelevant, it is our HISTORY and our PASSION that we have always known and loved.

The story (or most common thoery at least) behind the bluebird name isn't particularly exciting, but once you have chanted it on the terraces over thousands of games, it doesnt matter. What matters is that Bluebirds means Cardiff City and Cardiff City means Love.

In 1908 Riverside FC was granted permission to take the name Cardiff City. The colour was changed to blue then. That year a play in Cardiff called, 'Blue Birds',' by a Belgian author resulted in the knickname, 'The Bluebirds.' being adopted by City.

He was a property developer, building restoration expert, wasn't he also the mayor of cardiff, and has very strong links in Scotland too. Think he expanded the work he did here up north.

Restored cardiff castle and castle coch.

He died young in 1900 but still unsure if the blue & white links?

Was it simply because it was the start of a new era, as we are seeing today.....?

So what you are hinting at Gray is we changed our colours in 1909 as a show of apprication to a benefactor who gave the club something it couldn't possibly afford at the time?

Interesting so VT's change to Red is the second rebranding in the history of CCFC :ayatollah: :ayatollah: Good spot 8-)

BTW the Rugby team of Cardiff have also always played in Blue surely there has to be a connection or reason for the Blue?

Steve the play "The Blue Bird" was written in 1908 and first played on stage in Moscow during that year. It was played at the New Theatre in April 1911 over two years after Cardiff City changed colours to Blue & White.

Whatever the reason the colour change had nothing to do with the play although it is universally accepted that it resulted in our clubs nick name "The Bluebirds".

Does anyone know why some people are so attached to last seasons badge which has only been used for 19 seasons of the 103 year history?

As far as I am aware it didnt come on the shirt until 1988 and wasnt used between 2003-2008, yet some supporters are up in arms about us losing it because of our history? Doesn't seem like it was part of our history for long.
