Malky Mackay “Massively Happy” With Budget!

Tue Jun 12, 2012 11:23 pm

Malky Mackay has revealed he is “massively happy” with the financial backing he has to strengthen his Cardiff City squad.

The club’s Malaysian investors have made cash available for Mackay to recruit this summer and the Bluebirds boss has already shown his intent with multi-million pound moves for strikers Jay Rodriguez and Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson.

Rodriguez eventually opted for Premier League new boys Southampton in a near £7m move from Burnley, while Wolves are leading the chase for the £3m-rated Lillestrom hit-man Sigurdarson.

But Mackay said: “We are working on recruitment all the time and that will continue, but the European Championships impact on what happens.

“Top Premier League clubs have their targets and when they sign players the effect will filter down and others will become available.

“Last season we had to fast-track things and bring players in quickly.

“That is now bearing fruit and we are in a far better position.

“We have the basis of a squad, which we didn’t have a year ago, and can work from there.

“Our targets have been identified and we are talking to clubs, agents and players.

“We are working to push those targets along, but the reality is we still may not get them.

“At that stage we move to our next target. It is all extremely structured and there is no panic going on.”

So far Mackay has made only one signing, goalkeeper Joe Lewis picked up from Peterborough on a free transfer.

But the Scot has called for patience on the transfer front while the investment from Malaysia also means Mackay is able to keep top players such as Peter Whittingham and Joe Mason.

“I would love to have all the players we want to sign in by the start of our pre-season trip next month but that won’t happen,” said Mackay.

“But I am in a far better position now than I was before last season.

“I am massively happy with the financial backing I have to bring in players.

“It’s maddening that the transfer window closes at end of August and we start playing Championship football several weeks earlier than that.

“It’s the same for everybody, but clubs, including ourselves, could start with a team and a month later it could look completely different.”

If you are going to place a bet, I'd do it early if I was you, as a lot of the bookmakers have reduced the odds on us within the past few days, especially since the news of the re-brand and investment package!

I got 16/1, but there are only 4 companies providing those odds atm and as soon as our signings start rolling in, the odds will reduce quickly IMO! :ayatollah:

Top Cat - agree with you, it's got to be a big year.

We have had a few of these types of years mind of the last few, and to be fair we have not done too bad getting to play-offs and cup finals.

I always like a good cup run but, this year I'd be happy to see the youth and fringe players start in all cup matches to ensure we focus the main squad on the league.

It's going to be another tense and exciting season.....like for all football fan.....which I'm really starting to look forward to after the mess of the close season.

Money does not guarantee promotion but it would be nice for Malky to make some quality signings in certain positions to give us a better chance. We have done well to pick up bargains like Mason and Turner, etc but let's look at a few known and trusted players if the money is there.

"We are working to push those targets along, but the reality is we still may not get them" - Why does he ruin it every time with shit like this the guy is boring me to death with his media spin now every three days, we seen all this for 8months last season ffs , just sign them and shut the f**k up MM from the media because your starting to become a triads puppet like the rest at our club.

I don't think Malky or anybody else at the club can win at the moment, because as soon as they announce something, people tell them to come up with the goods or shut up and if they don't come out and announce anything, everybody wants to know what's happening at the club!

You quoted in your OP with 10million pounds worth of players we was supposed to be after yet we will not pay that figure to one man(sam) so the club can move forward and they can then convert there money in to equity meaning they get what there supposed to be after 100% ownership is it not? we have had the rebrand so they say mr whiteley says there not doing anything else no red seats no change of nickname what they waiting for then keith, instead we get storys about players here and everywhere and whatever comes off will be loans against the club from the malaysians with intrest. PEOPLE REALLY THINK WE WOULD HAVE SPENT 10MILLION ON TWO PLAYERS IF THESE TWO HAD COME OFF

The OP is what I've copied and pasted from Walesonline and not my quote!

There's lots of questions in your post here, which neither of us I suspect, are in a position to answer 100% accurately!

My speculation, is that for what ever reason, VT is not happy with the deal that Sam is trying to broke for himself and he may be also unhappy, with any ongoing negotiations with PMG as well!

As for the spending £10 million on 2 players, well here's what I posted yesterday:-

I can't believe that some people believe there isn't money available for transfers!

Unless you disbelieve Carl, when he posted that the Malaysians were phoning Malky on a daily basis during the January transfer window, asking him who he'd signed!

Or unless you disbelieve Marvin Sordell, who admitted he was on his way to Cardiff when his agent asked him if he wanted to go to Bolton instead, or even Craig Noone who also admitted that he thought he was off to Cardiff in January!

And now some seem to be doubting Malky, who has publically stated that we put in a bid for Rodriguez!

There is also the report that Malky had been sounded out by Norwich, but he has stayed, stating that he has unfinished business at Cardiff!

Does anybody really think he'd have turned down a former team, who are now in the Premiership to stay with us, if the only thing he had to offer any transfer targets were tins of Heinz beans?

People need to get real here, we lost out on Sordell because a Premiership team came calling, we lost out on Noone because their Chairman came back off holiday and decided that he didn't want to sell us a player, as we were competing with them at the top end of the Championship, we lost out on Rodriguez because we couldn't offer him Premier League football which Southampton can and if we lose out on Sigurdarson's signature, it'll be most likely because of the Norwegian connection!

I suspect there'll be other signatures we lose out on as well, as Malky will be shopping in a higher grade basket than we've been used to in the past, but we aren't the big club, that we'd all like to be as yet and I'm sure that there'll be some more of our targets, who'll also end up signing for Premiership teams as well! :ayatollah:

Re the betting. One thing this board is good for is getting a bit of a scoop before the bookies know (which is unusual as bookies have ears everywhere). I remember just before VT came and we were on a potential transfer embargo...the bookies had us right out in the betting. Knowing what I knew from this site I placed a spread bet on Cardiff City's points - we got to play offs and I made a grand. Am looking to do the same this season and quick but Spreadex haven't formed a market yet. With spreadbetting you don't have to outlay any money up front which is great as I begrudge forking out £100 on a bet and having to waiting best part of a year to get it back. :ayatollah:

In my opinion, Malky has now put a lot of pressure on himself to deliver promotion next season now, no excuses. :ayatollah:

As far as ive read, PMG debt is now agreed and will be paid in full over 18 months.

Another example of Malky dishing out one excuse after another to hide the fact that when he needs to make signings that matter,he is not in the same class as Dave Jones, and that coming from someone who wanted to see the back of Jones and was very happy to see him go,i said some time ago that one of many reasons i don't think Malky is good enough to be our manager was his inability to make the real quality signings, looks like that weakness is still prevalent

So don't other clubs don't lose out on signings, because they can't offer players Premiership football or the money that other club's can? :?

Malky did superbly overall last Summer IMO, in bringing in the signings that he managed and as I stated in a post above, we're now shopping in a higher grade level shopping basket, for players that a lot of teams will want, so when that happens, you're always going to lose out on certain players under these circumstances!

As I also said in another post, had we been trying to buy players from Bury, Rochdale or Dagenham & Redbridge etc., (no offence intended to these teams), I'm sure we'd attain a better level of success!
