ULTRA GROUP

Thu Jun 07, 2012 8:12 pm

I'm not sure if this would be a good idea. It has been talked about quite a lot today and was wondering whether you'd be for or against?
It would be a non-racist, non-violent and were not going to be hooligans
Just a group of fans who want to put a bit of atmosphere in the ground and who are passionate for Cardiff City

What do you reckon?

Re: ULTRA GROUP

I travel to Rome quite a bit with work, and am familiar with the Ultras, especially the SS Lazio ones, or the Irriducibili (hardcore, or indestructables) as they are better known.

I suppose you could call them 'just a group of fans' but there is a lot more to it than that. All Italian Ultra have a political agenda, mostly on the far right (eg Lazio, Inter, Verona), but one or two on the far left (eg Livorno, Fiorentina, Milan). They have a culture of extreme violence, against each other, but especially the police. They do not touch 'civilians', or scarfers as we might call them. There is a code of honour.

The Ultras have a rigid, hierarchical structure. They call strikes, demonstrations, and as a last resort, attacks on the players, and local police stations etc. They have massive influence on club presidents. The recently deceased Giorgio Chinaglia was a huge hero of the Irriducibili, as is Paolo Di Canio. Ultra groups have their own websites, radio stations, and shops, selling merchandise. Some have an office at the stadium.

Ultra groups often have a gemellaggio (twinning) arrangement with those of other clubs. This means mutual respect, and no aggro. Lazio have twinnings with Inter, Bari, and Real Madrid, among others. A twinning can only be broken away from home, ie when you are in the minority.

A major campaign of the Lazio ultras over the last five yaers has been for justice for Gabriele Sandri, who was shot dead by a police officer in a motorway services. The officer concerned was jailed.

Sorry to go on a bit! By all means form a non-rascist, non-violent group of fans, an excellent idea :ayatollah: But you won't be Ultras! And Ultras sing and chant for the full 90 minutes. No quiet spells, especially when you are behind. Some massive banners too, usually with slogans to fit that particular match.

Best of luck :ayatollah:
