Why do the working classes love the Queen so much?

Sun Jun 03, 2012 5:35 pm

I've been trying to wrap my heads around this one for the last few weeks and it makes no sense to me. The Queen and the Monarchy represent the very richest and probably the most vulgar parts of our nation. It is by nature very elitist and yet the working classes seem to just love them. This is despite the complete lack of social mobility in society and complete lack of power the Queen holds.

The Royal Family is nothing more than a representative of the UK. They have no power, therefore they have no accountability. With no accountability I see no reason to praise her for anything she has done. Congrats on not dying in the last 60 years but I don't see the need to have all this fanfare and parade.

Is all of this simply a gesture of how much we're all proud to be British? Is this not really about the Queen, but instead a celebration of our history and heritage? That would make way more sense to me personally (although I don't buy into the whole "proud because I was born here" argument) as it would at least account for ironic nature of a lot of working class people in regards to the monarchy.

you are obviously firmly against the royal family and are absolutely entitled to your opinion,me personally have no time for it all and choose not to watch it on TV or join any parades
Other people such as my 98 year old grandmother really loves the concept of the royal family and will be enjoying the coverage and celebrations in the next couple of days, plenty of other people will be doing the same.
Its each to their own at the end of the day, same with religion, its not for everyone but we should at least repect other peoples beliefs etc

It's questionable as to how much real support they've got.

For example, in news reports the tv media will always give prominence to anyone who says positive things about the monarchy, but would not give hardly any prominence to Republican sentiments. The same applies to the newspapers.

Now, it may be that there is a genuine majority in favour of the monarchy (it would hardly be surprising given the amount of positive spin that they get), but I suspect it's nowhere near as much as the establishment would like to make you believe.

I always remember back in the mid 90's ITV did a programme on the monarchy asking people to ring in and vote about keeping them or not - surprise, surprise, there was a majority in favour. My experience however was that I tried ringing the anti monarchy number all the way through the evening and only managed to register a vote with about 5 minutes to go - I asked a number of friends if anyone else had tried ringing, and a few of my friends had - but in favour of the monarchy and they had got through straight away  Very surprising, bearing in mind that the majority of people ringing were ringing in favour

My friend commented at the time that I was naive in even thinking that there would be a genuine attempt by the media to get a genuinely fair result.

Anyway, my position is to retain my Republicanism and try to persuade others about the inequities of the monarchy, but at the end of the day, people have to make up their own minds on this issue, and hopefully many will see through the media's bias.
