Gylfi Sigurdsson: Liverpool may bid says Brendan Rodgers

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers may bid for Gylfi Sigurdsson if the Icelandic international's proposed permanent switch to Swansea collapses.
Sigurdsson has verbally agreed a club record £6.8m move from Hoffenheim to the Swans but has yet to sign.
The attacking midfielder played under Rodgers at their former club Reading and the Reds boss said: "If he comes on the market I have to be interested.
"He knows that I rate his qualities and abilities."
Swansea's agreement for Rodgers to move to Anfield included a clause preventing Liverpool bidding for any Swansea players within 12 months.

If he [Gylfi Sigurdsson] comes on the market I have to be interested. He knows that I rate his qualities and abilities

Brendan Rodgers
Liverpool manager
But Rodgers says Sigurdsson, 22, joined on loan from German club Hoffenheim in January only because the Northern Irishman was in charge.
"Gylfi came to Swansea because I was there as manager and his scoring record was fantastic," said Rodgers.
"I pushed the club to make an agreement to sign Sigurdsson permanently and they did that in terms of the fee - and agreed the salary.
"So I have said to Huw [Jenkins, Swansea chairman]: 'I'm not going to do anything untoward. This is a guy you want, but it is down to Gylfi'.
"If he comes on the market I have to be interested. He knows that I rate his qualities and abilities.
"I said to Huw: 'If I speak to the kid, I'll tell him to speak to the new manager, whoever that is'.
"But if he's not comfortable with that, he's in the market place then - and I have to look at him."
The 22-year-old impressed during his spell at the Liberty Stadium and scored seven goals in 17 starts.
Hoffenheim signed Sigurdsson in 2010 for £6.5m from Reading.
Swansea's initial bid, thought to be close to £4m, was rejected by the Bundesliga club, who are keen to recoup the fee they paid for Sigurdsson.
The Welsh club earned £45.9m from television and prize money during their first season in the Premier League, finishing 11th in the table, and so have funds to strengthen the squad.
Sigurdsson said in April he would be happy to stay at the Liberty Stadium beyond the end of the season.
But Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins had also admitted the Welsh club would struggle to keep hold of the midfielder.

Very difficult to attract new players knowing Brendan's gone and a player that kept you in the top half of the table is about to follow him..... ?

Seems the Jacks are having a bad day

Sky Sports sources understand Graeme Jones' talks with Swansea over the manager's job have broken down.

Jones had been favourite to become Swansea's new manager, replacing Brendan Rodgers who became the new Liverpool boss on Friday.

The Swans had been given permission to speak to the Wigan assistant manager earlier this week.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins was keen to bring Jones back to the club where he spent two years as an assistant from 2007 to 2009.

The 42-year-old is the only man who has yet been interviewed for the job.

But it is understood that talks have broken down between the two parties

I have no doubt Brenda will keep his word. As for gylfi it's all about whether he was signing for the club or the manager. Only he knows but I don't think its a dead cert he will go to Liverpool

Yes, the respect he had for Watford, when he stated he'd not be leaving. Only to leave within a week.

Or the respect for the Jacks, when in an interview last season he said he'd have left that season but for his dad dying.

Or the respect he's showing right now, destabilising the jacks talks with Gylfi.

If you serious think he'd not go back on his word... and if you seriously think Huw would really dislike that if the money was right... I've the Tower of London for sale.

Hollins looked lively enough last time I saw him... and Curtis seems well enough. Most of the others are still most likely OK. Disgusting attitude IMHO, sort of one I'd expect from your chairman-given his history of paying his own companies debts. Given you lot keep tyring to dismiss what you did, saying it was only £1.5m I'm surprised such a small figure hasn't been paid back to the people you screwed over. Its only a tiny fraction of what has been made in the past few months, and you wouldn't have a club if it wasn't for those creditors.

As for Sam -it was a debt he ran up himself and its not due until 2016 anyway.

I can't see Rodgers coming for any of your players this year, but I think he will get Sygi, who hasn't signed as one of your players yet, I believe.

What is your genuine feeling on your prospects for next season waddle?

I can see it going either way :

1. A new Manager comes in with the same kind of footballing philosophy and most players stay - and you could be in a better position than last year, as with the compensation for Rodgers and anothe season in the top flight, you'll be very financially secure

2. Players do go, and the next Manager is not that successful and you're in a relegation fight.

I suppose it's an impossible question to answer at this stage (and so much will hinge on who you appoint as the new Manager), but what is the general feeling amongst your friends as to the likelihood?

I work in the Swansea area, so am constantly around many of your fans, and the general feeling I'm picking up is they feel it's more likely to be the first rather than the 2nd option, although some are very pessimistic - would you agree with that?

If it's not due for payment until 20126 why then can't you as club move on until Langstone's (hamman)has been repaid. Oh so a debt isn't a debt because he spent it on your club and thats his fault.

Simply it was a stupid remark. Now you have realised HOW stupid you'd liek to 'rebrand' it as throwaway.
So, what do you really think ? I bet you aren't lobbying for it to be repaid, despite how easy it would be for your club to now do so.

Why can't we (CCFC) as a club move on ? Because its such a large debt and is potentially subject to legal action due to its nature. Thats simple enough. Elements of it are (rightly) disputed, and there is enough debate on here for you to understand that.

No such issues with the money owed to the creditors of SCFC who were simply stiffed.

There is nothing wrong with a business having debt as long as you can service it. If you can borrow at 10% and make a 15% return then its good business sense. Cardiff have always serviced its debt. You jacks can only talk in maybes about City whereas your administrations are already on record

So the 7% that your owners are charging the club is servicing the debt , worrying times more so for you than us worrying about a player who may or may not sign for us .If we get relegated next season we'll still survive , without the so called massive investment will you?

They are charging interest but footing the bill. The latter part is the servicing. Unusual times at the moment but then they are sorting out the previous mess. Still no talk of administration though. Also talk of a debt to equity arrangement so should fall in line nicely. You seem more worried about the debt than I do, but then you always worry about us don't you?
