Cardiff City consider new bid for Keogh

Sat Jun 02, 2012 6:57 pm

CARDIFF City are maintaining interest in Coventry City defender Richard Keogh.

Coventry City have turned down a firm offer from Cardiff for defender Keogh, thought to be around £800,000, and the Bluebirds are considering an improved bid.

The Sky Blues have made it clear they want Keogh – who is getting married in the south-west of England today – to stay, but he is keen to keep playing Championship football and Coventry are facing a League One campaign after being relegated.

City boss Malky Mackay, who has put growing speculation linking him to a move to Norwich City out of his mind, will continue to press to agree a fee with Coventry for Keogh, whose contract runs out next summer.

“From the board level, to the executive, to the fans, to everyone, we want him to stay,” said Steve Waggott, Coventry City’s development director. “He is a talisman for our club and we are in talks with him on a new contract.”

The 25-year-old Keogh, who can play at centre-back or full-back, knows Cardiff players Ben Turner and Aron Gunnarsson well from their days together at the Ricoh Arena.

Cardiff City have added one player, goalkeeper Joe Lewis from Peterborough United, to their squad so far and he is a direct replacement for Tom Heaton, who was out of contract and has left he Bluebirds.

Mackay is working to add up to 10 new players this summer, a mix of youth and experience, just as he did a year ago.

City made a strong enquiry for 21-year-old Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez, although there was no firm bid, before Southampton’s financial muscle and newly gained Premier League status led to a £7m fee being accepted.

The Bluebirds also moved for Fleetwood Town’s highly-rated striker Jamie Vardy, 25, who eventually signed for Leicester City for more than £1m. He chose Leicester because his family are based in the Sheffield area.

Mackay and his backroom staff are still working hard on squad recruitment with strikers and midfield players top the priority list, but national newspaper reports linking City with a move for Wycombe Wanderers striker Stuart Beavon is way off the mark.

City will look for Kadeem Harris, the young winger signed from Wycombe Wanderers, to have a breakthrough season within the squad, while they will also look for midfield player Joe Ralls to continue his progress after stepping up from the youth Academy.

Filip Kiss, Slovakia’s under-21 team captain, is another player Mackay hopes will be better equipped to deal with the physical demands on players after coming through his first season. The former Slovan Bratislava player made only three substitutes appearances in April and May last season, but is expected to make a far bigger contribution after coming through a full pre-season training programme.

Stephen McPhail, having found the right balance on medication to control his Sjogren’s Syndrome condition, is expected to play a full part in pre-season training which includes a week-long trip to Switzerland in mid-July.

McPhail was dipped in and out of Championship action last season, but Mackay believes he will again have a big impact within the squad and hopes he will play even more matches next season.

City released seven players at the end of last season with Heaton, attracting interest from Bristol City among other clubs, the big name to depart. Former Bluebirds manager Dave Jones, now in charge at Sheffield Wednesday, was also keen on Heaton, but has now signed former England keeper Chris Kirkland from Wigan Athletic.

Full-back Lee Naylor, winger Paul Quinn, midfield players Aaron Wildig and Jon Meades, defender Alex Evans and goalkeeper Jordan Santiago were the other players released, while Liam Lawrence returned to Portsmouth after his loan spell.

Wildig has now signed for Shrewsbury Town, where he was on loan last season, while centre-half Evans has had trial spells with clubs in Scotland, including Falkirk and St Johnstone.

Big striker Jon Parkin clearly doesn’t figure in Mackay’s plans at Cardiff City, having been left out on loan at Scunthorpe United even when French striker Rudy Gestede was injured last season. Parkin still has another year of his Cardiff deal to run, but looks certain to move on before the start of 2012-13.

Solomon Taiwo, who finished last season on loan with Leyton Orient, is another who will move on at some stage even though he is currently under contract through next season.

City will have a development team in the newly-formed Under-21 National league next season and that squad will include young pros Jesse Darko, Ben Nugent, Adedejo Oshilaja, Kevin Saint-Luce, Theo Wharton and Tommy O’Sullivan, who have all committed to extended contracts.

Bluebirds players report back for the start of training early next month and have a series of pre-season fixtures arranged following their trip to Switzerland, where they will focus on training and will not play matches on that training trip.

City’s main pre-season games are against Forest Green Rovers (away, Saturday, July 28), Cheltenham Town (away, Tuesday, July 31), Oxford United (away, Saturday, August 4), AFC Bournemouth (away, Tuesday, August 7) and Newcastle United (home, Saturday, August 11).

How is Richard Keogh above our station? :?

Also why so negative, the transfer window isn't open yet and a lot of players won't be moving until contracts have been agreed/talks have broken down and other players are brought in at other teams.

Like Gerrard for example, we want him gone but I can't see him going until we have another centre back to replace him in.

Thing I'm annoyed about is, If we are willing to spend 1m on a defender we better be spending double for Striker and Winger/Wingers.

Yeh but obviously there's a budget malky has been given so if it wasn't that big a budget then he wouldn't blow 1m on a defender so if he does then makes u think how much million will be spent on the midfield and strikers

Yet we singed a goalkeeper so far out of about 25names i could put there which the club have leaked for press coverage who was never ever comming to start with.

I certainly wouldn't class Keogh as above us

As for frees, I'd be more than happy with players like Taylor, Gunarrson, Cowie, Conway on frees to bolster what we already have. Nothing wrong with fees at all.

A shrewd manager can pick up some quality squad players on free transfers. It's not just the starting 11to consider....there has to be at least another 5/6 players who can just slot in when there are injuries/suspensions, and you need those fringe players to keep your better players on their toes.

You can pick up some bargains when players contracts expire....Demba Ba was a free agent, I would have taken David Nugent or Kevin Phillips last season to partner Miller. We have lost several players on frees....Ledley, Bothroyd and Matthews. If Malky is shrewd enough he could pick up a few bargains.

Good post and although Malky picked up some cracking bargains last Summer, we'll have to wait and see if he's as successful this Summer! :ayatollah:
