O/T External Hard Drive Help

Fri Jun 01, 2012 7:01 am

My laptop recently died on me and as I'm currently travelling and in Aus I went to a computer shop and asked them to take the hard drive out so I could use it externally. I have not bought a laptop since and I was going to use Internet cafes ect when I want to transfer pictures from an SD card to my hard drive ect

I tried this the other day but when I plugged my hard drive in and clicked on the Owner folder on the hard drive it gave me an error MSG saying that I couldn't access the folder as I wasn't the owner. I have not had much luck since either.

Has anyone got any idea how i can sort this out as I have a shit load of pictures and music files on the hard drive that I need to access.

How are you plugging in your hard drive, are you using a caddy, if you are and you plug the drive into your laptop, then if you go to "my computer" you will see the hard drive you can then open up the drive and transfer what you want to onto your laptop or if you have a card connected onto that or vis-versa

read your post again, how are you connecting your hard drive to the internet cafe computer

Sounds to me like its just a permissions problem.

Windows will only let you access folders you own and as the hard drive has been removed from your laptop and is being used on a computer with different user credentials.

Not sure you will be able to remedy the problem in an internet cafe as I think you would need administrator access to change the permissions on al the folders on the drive so anyone can access them.

May be worth asking the computer shop that did the original work for you to do it as its a 5 min job and they probably didnt think about it when they removed the drive.

What I would suggest if you are travelling is to use something like Google drive to store your pictures on as hard drives arent the most reliable of things and the last thing you would want to do is lose all your pics.

I think that's the problem I have. Iv moved since I had it done but I'm sure it shouldn't be a problem of I took it else where to get ownership of the files.

See where your coming from by using something ICloud or something but also have a load of Music files as I do a load of DJing so need access to them also.
