" City braced for Norwich approach "

Fri Jun 01, 2012 5:25 am

CARDIFF CITY are bracing themselves for a Norwich City swoop for manager Malky Mackay after the Bluebirds boss was installed as odds-on favourite to succeed Paul Lambert at Carrow Road.

The intense speculation surrounding Mackay came after Canaries chief Paul Lambert offered his resignation as he prepares to join Aston Villa. Norwich’s joint biggest shareholders, husband and wife team Michael Wynn-Jones and Delia Smith, each know Mackay well.

The Cardiff fans’ favourite spent six successful years with Norwich, where he was captain and helped the club win promotion to the Premier League in 2004.

Some Norwich fans have already talked on social media websites about Mackay being the ideal replacement for the departing Lambert.

However, if Norwich were to make an official approach for Mackay’s services, they could expect stern resistance from the Bluebirds.

Mackay recently signed an extension to his contract which ties him to Cardiff until 2016.

If he were to leave, the Bluebirds would demand hefty compensation... just as Swansea did with Liverpool over the loss of Brendan Rodgers.

Mackay is settled in south Wales and keen to build upon the legacy he has just started after taking the Bluebirds to the Carling Cup final and the Championship play-offs.

He wants to continue that success story, but is waiting to hear how much investment the club’s Malaysian owners are willing to put into the team for the 2012-13 season.

Mackay was as low as 1-2 on with one bookmaker to move to Norwich, with Chris Hughton and former Carrow Road favourite Steve Bruce also high in the betting.

The talk surrounding Mackay grew on a day when Lambert offered his resignation, but he revealed they were not accepting it.

The Norwich statement read: “The club regrets to confirm that Paul Lambert has offered his resignation from his position as Norwich manager.

“We have fought hard to keep Paul at Norwich and have not accepted his resignation whilst discussions with another club are taking place.

“However, whatever happens, we want to place on record our sincere gratitude for everything Paul has done for the club over the last three fantastic seasons.”

Lambert, 42, took the Canaries up from League One after being brought in from Colchester in August 2009, and then immediately on into the Premier League, where they finished a creditable 12th place.

However, once Villa dispensed with the services of Alex McLeish after a disappointing campaign, the former Celtic and Borussia Dortmund midfielder was high on their wanted list.

The Norwich statement continued: “When Paul joined us in August 2009 we were in 66th position in the English football pyramid and the club was on the brink of financial meltdown.

“Today we are a Barclays Premier League football club, on a financially sound footing and with a stadium full to capacity.

“The club does not need to sell any players and the finances are in place to substantially strengthen the excellent squad which helped us finish in 12th position in the Premier League last season.

“Rest assured that everyone behind the scenes at Carrow Road remains absolutely focused on continuing to help the club progress.”

Villa have turned to Lambert after Roberto Martinez rejected another opportunity to take over the Villa Park helm, having also turned down Liverpool.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan said: “I gave Roberto permission to talk to Liverpool and he considered it.

“I think he spoke to Villa, or I think they had conversations with an agent about it.

“I have to work very closely with Roberto and I believe it is a democracy. Managers and footballers change clubs, we have to accept that.

“I have known Roberto for years since I signed him as a player and we have a fantastic working rapport – I trust him and he trusts me implicitly.”

If they do approach us at least we'll find out where we stand and hopefully what the owners plans are.

As far as i'm concerned we will know 100% were this club is heading in the next few days, cause if MM sees Norwich as a step forward from us then it's over as far as i can see.

As much as I love Malky but everyone seems to have forgotten how shit and boring our football turned into last season, yeah no doubt we had a brilliant season in fairness but the footy was crap.

I'd have a punt on Steve Bruce at 7/1. Experienced Premier League manager who is a free agent and played for Norwich early in his career.

Norwich can well and truly bugger off. I still hold a grudge against them after they beat us to the autos.

Cardiff City have moved to deny reports
Norwich City have made an approach for
manager Malky Mackay.
Sky Sports are claiming the Canaries
have made an enquiry for Mackay in the
wake of reports Celtic have turned down
their advances for Celtic boss Neil
Lennon.
Mackay is among the favourites to
succeed Paul Lambert at Carrow Road
after the Norwich boss handed in his
resignation last night.
That resignation was turned down by the
Canaries board, but it seems certain
Lambert will leave to take up the vacant
position at Aston Villa.
Norwich’s joint biggest shareholders,
husband and wife team Michael Wynn-
Jones and Delia Smith, each know
Mackay well, but the Bluebirds have
denied receiving an approach following
the reports.
A spokesman said: "The club will not get
involved in speculative lines in every
instance but at this moment no approach
has been made to Cardiff City for Malky."
Mackay only signed a new long-term
contract until 2016 in February, insisting
he is determined to deliver Premier
League football to the Welsh capital.
The Cardiff fans’ favourite spent six
successful years with Norwich, where he
was captain and helped the club win
promotion to the Premier League in
2004.
Some Norwich fans have already talked
on social media websites about Mackay
being the ideal replacement for the
departing Lambert.
However, if Norwich were to make an
official approach for Mackay’s services,
they could expect stern resistance from
the Bluebirds.
