In the 90s, any true hardcore bluebirds will remember this. Families were split, friends, work colleagues etc. It almost went as far some fans thinking about creating a splinter club.
Off course I am talking about the end of the 1992-1993 season. Many true hardcore bluebirds like myself were stunned that the club wanted to replace Chris Pike with Phil Stant. Off course the younger plastics (The original plastic army) were eager to replace Pike who was labelled as a "Dinosaur".
Chris Pike was a welshmen and in his prime, they wanted to replace this man with an englishman who as far as i'm concerned couldn't give a damn about the club, the fans were disgusted at these wholesale changes. The club was selling a fan favourite and a local lad, he was top goalscorer for years. The valley rams boycotted the final games of the season in honour of Pike, people were thrown out of the supporters trust and much scaremongering went on about the very future of the club.
Some said without the introduction of Stant we wouldn't have a Cardiff City to support, others said we were sellng our souls. Pike went on to have a glittering career with Hereford and Rhayader town whereas Stant was deemed a major flop.
We must learn from that situation, it took a solid 6 years before the crowds returned. I guarentee the pro red brigade now are the same ones who want to get rid of Pike 20 years ago. Again it is the true hardcore Bluebirds like me and many others who saw sense.
