FINDINGS FROM MALAYSIA

Thu May 31, 2012 2:37 pm

I'm currently in Malaysia in the process of backpacking round the world and found a few things interesting relating to the whole 'changing to the color red and marketing in Asia saga', that I thought a few of you may find interesting...

Firstly, I wore my city shirt around Kuala Lumpur and did get recognition from a couple of passers by in the street which I didnt fully expect.

More interestingly however, I saw maybe a dozen people in 24 hrs wearing QPR shirts around town, with the premier league badge on their sleaves. But, these QPR kits were not their blue and white home ones... Every single one of them was their RED and white away shirt (it may even be their third shirt?) I found this surprising anyway as surely the home shirt of a team is more favourable by the majority of people to buy if you support a team? Also it was alot more QPR shirts than I expected to see considering they have only been in the prem for 1 season, and I only saw a handful of Man U and Arsenal shirts.

Then, on my next Air Asia flight out of KL I noticed they were actually selling the Red and white QPR kit on board the flight, but not their home blue kit! I know that they are sponsered by Air Aisia and red is their brand colour, so maybe that is the logical reason why they just sell the red away? But it just seems wierd to me why you wouldnt sell the home kit as well as the away?

Anyway I thought this may be of interest to a few people as I dont post here often. Will try and attach a photo! :ayatollah:

Interesting,

Wouldn't of thought QPR but I guess it makes sense with the airline selling them.
Red is clearly popular out there for the reasons we now know.
still would prefer a great replica shirt in BLUE to sell in THIS country :ayatollah:
I'm just glad it's Malaysia that sponsor us and not an airline....like Virgin.

Feck walking round Luton with that on my new red shirt

It is obvious the Malaysians want to change to Red for business reasons. They are not thinking of doing it to piss long time Cardiff supporters off.

I would go with their business decision as long as we remain Cardiff City, the Bluebirds. The shirt colour and shirt badge does not bother me if it is for the long term benefit of my club.

I think the biggest surprise was seeing all the QPR shirts around! I think it shows if we can get promoted that there will definately be a demand for our shirts over here... as long as it has the premier league badges on the arms they will buy!!

So perhaps VT should market our red away kit in Malaysia while we continue to play in blue at home :ayatollah:

On the Air Asia flight the shirts on their own were going for 260 Malaysian Ringit which is about £55-£60!

Simple answer then. Play in blue at home and market a red away kit in asia. I don't see a problem. Everyone's happy.

Regarding AirAsia - selling QPR shirts - Tony Fernades owns Air Asia and is the Rangers chairman!!

Thought i'd add that I saw my first city shirt being worn by a Malaysian local kid on the island of Lankawi today, which is just off the west coast of malaysia and quite sparsely populated. We must be shifting a few over here then, it only took me 3 days here to see one around.
