1RRW we were in Normandy Barracks at the time of the Falklands However, we were packed to go to Lemgo and I was on a Stalwart instructors course at Leconfield at the time.(did loads of courses there as you may know very well as an RCT) LOL The Welsh Guards went instead of us as we were in transit. As you know the Aldershot Garrison went but because we were all MFO Boxed up they went instead. Even the Church Crookham Gurkers went.

I used to play Welsh League for Pontyclun before I joined the Army and there was a lad from Beddau who joined 1RRW, whose real name I can't remember, but he had blonde/fair hair and his nickname was Raisins (No idea why)!

I know he played rugby for 1RRW, who I think were Army Champions at the time and I went to Lemgo on a number of occasions, especially when the Blues & Royals were based there, but I also played football against 1RRW in Lemgo and Luebeckke as well!

I was based in Aldershot when they moved the Driver Training Regt to Leconfield and had several long drives to transfer vehicles up there! I also went back there in the late 80's to do a MT Sgt's course, where I supposedly became the first RCT Sgt to come top of the course!

Great times! :) :ayatollah:

I remember 7 Sigs from Herford being Army Champions as well as 1RRW, but you're talking rugby whilst I'm talking football! :)

I did play both rugby and football representatively for the Army however, but I only played rugby representatively for the Army in Canada, where there wasn't so much competition! :) :ayatollah:

If you're talking football, do you mean 6 a side?

I was based in Rheindahlen for 4 years prior to N Ireland and I also played in the BAOR 6 a side competition, where I seem to remember 28 Sigs winning the competition outright and I got sent off in the final minute against the time wasting twats! :)

I also seem to remember 28 Amphibious Regt RE from Hameln, winning the competition one year as well, but I think my appearances in the competition, were before 1RRW got stationed at Lemgo!

Sorry yes, it was 6 a side...long time ago I am 56 now.
All Sigs seemed to cheat, all the best players (rugby and footie) were sent on postings to be in the competitions.
As you know, Signals are required at all theaters. They could be posted to where the top sports men were needed!
An infantry regiment like ours though were sent en-block and had to represent us as were, so to speak. I'm sure you know what I mean?
I was in Lemgo from 1980 to 1982 but went from there to Netheravon (Support Weapons Wing) for a couple of years then onto Warminster in the trials and development unit (School of Infantry) doing trials on the Warrior and SA80.
