Cardiff City captain Mark Hudson backs Malky Mackay to lead club to bigger things

May 29 2012

Cardiff City captain Mark Hudson was disappointed with way season ended

CARDIFF CITY skipper Mark Hudson has backed Bluebirds’ boss Malky Mackay to have an even bigger impact at the club next season.

In his first season at the helm of the Bluebirds Mackay did a sterling job, narrowly missing out on promotion in the play-offs and guiding his side to a Carling Cup final appearance against Liverpool.

There was disappointment that the Bluebirds missed out on promotion once again as they lost out to West Ham, but Hudson believes the perfect platform is in place to push on.

“It was the manager’s first season with Cardiff City and he is only just starting to build the squad that he wants,” added Hudson.

“I’m sure there’s going to be new faces now during the summer. Things will change, but that is what happens in this game.

“It was a good first season, but we’ve got high expectations in the dressing room, the club has too, and the supporters.

“We are trying to push on to the next level. It’s going to be a long summer, but we now need to be fit and ready for the next campaign.”

For the third season on the trot Cardiff stumbled at the final hurdle as they succumbed over two legs to the Hammers.

Hudson admits the pain is just as bad this time around, but believes positives must be taken.

Indeed the 30-year-old insists is has been an impressive first season under the new manager when all things are considered.

“It was disappointing the way it ended, but we will look back over the season and focus on the high points,” said Hudson.

“I think at the start of the season we might have been happy with the play-offs, but to come close again and miss out takes the edge off that a bit.

“It was a successful season and there were a lot of positives we could take from it. It was a long season and we had a small squad, but we stuck together really well.

“We took on board what the manager and his staff asked of us. Look at the way the squad came on and the way we gelled. If you look at the way things were at the start of the season then it was a huge turnaround.”

Despite missing out again the Bluebirds’ captain believes the building blocks are in place for another push in the new season.

“The season just gone has to be the platform,” added Hudson.

“This club has been building for a long time. “The last six, seven years it’s been moving in the right direction. The beginning of last season there was a new manager and new staff.

“Twelve players left and 12 came in.

“I’m not sure anyone thought we would have achieved what we did after all that.

“We got to a cup final and the play-offs, but we need to go one better next time.

“But we’ve still got a lot to learn in many ways and hopefully we can do that going into next season.

“You are learning all the time. We are a new squad, but we will have learned from last season and we need to take that through to the next one now.”

Mackay is already hard at work attempting to secure the new personnel to take the club forward.

Well that's a contradiction by Mr Hudson. We need a leader on the pitch to start with, one area he lacks in and whilst its nice being captain of a club and all the extra's that come with it, if you are not a gobshite on the pitch then you are absolutely useless to lead a successful team.

Maybe he'd be better as club captain - upstairs somewhere?

Bit funny how both Malky and DJ choose Mark Hudson as our captain.....its not all about shouting at players on the pitch.

Maybe Malky has given the benefit last season but I went to the home pre-season match against Parma and sat quite close to him. He was ranting and raving at Hudson for being too quiet and not instructing as captains should.

Now if you want me to start my previously well documented views, I wouldn;t even have Hudson in the team!

Enetr the usual suspects of Hudson is brilliant campaign

He has improved greatly in defending, they played as a team not individuals. Then scored a goal that many strikers would miss. The guy is doing okay. We seem to have short memories. Lets now see what happens in new seas
on.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Mackay repeatedly praised Hudson as a captain and professional? Quality player and a fine captain. Not everyone is the same blithering idiot as Anthony Gerrard.
