MATCH REPORT
CARLISLE UNITED 0 - 2 CARDIFF CITY

Nationwide League Division Three

At Brunton Park, Saturday October 19th 1996

CARLISLE UNITED'S AUTUMN SLUMP continued as they suffered their first home reverse of the season in a very disappointing display. The patched up Blues, who were without five first team regulars, never found anything like their true form as the men from South Wales inflicted the first home defeat on United since fellow Welshmen Wrexham won at Brunton Park on the day the East Stand was opened last April. This though, was a thoroughly poor effort by United who seem to have lost form and confidence over a two-week run which has coincided with a spate of injuries. The one bright spot was an excellent display by 19-year-old wonderkid Matt Jansen, who continues to interest a crop of top clubs, including Manchester United. The slightly-built winger from Wetheral is already being compared with Peter Beardsley, perhaps the most gifted player ever to wear a United shirt. From the off it was Jansen who was at the heart of United's few good moves. He set up an early chance for Allan Smart on his home debut, but the £100,000 Scot was wide with his header. It was Jansen again who laid on a chance for Warren Aspinall, but the burly midfield schemer was way over the top with his effort. Smart's best chance came near the interval when Jansen again set him up, but as former United keeper Tony Elliott came out to block, he sent his shot into the side netting. Veteran striker Steve White hit a volley inches wide for the Bluebirds on 35 minutes before United came closest to scoring. Aspinall's incisive pass picked out the irrepresible Jansen, who crossed for David Currie to drive against the legs of Elliott who blocked the ball away for a corner. Early in the second half, Cardiff stunned Carlisle with the opening goal. A foul on White brought about a free kick that was taken quickly and caught United cold as Carl Dale spun round to fire a shot past Tony Caig into the corner of the net. As United became increasingly disjointed, Stephane Pounewatchy needed to make a couple of tackles to keep the visitors out. With 81 minutes on the clock however, Cardiff deservedly scored a second goal. Caig's poor clearance fell straight to Jason Fowler, who ran into acres of space to drive in off the inside of the post. The goal brought a mass walkout by disgruntled United fans, who had already started slow handclapping and jeering long before the final whistle.

Words like dignity, integrity etc. don't seem to matter to some. Apparently, promotion is all that matters. I beg to differ.

I have done my time in the 70s 80s 90s and so on, so what is wrong with wanting to take on the best teams in the land. The last time i looked it was 2012, life moves on if i wanted to live in the past i would still be on £8.00 a week what i was taken home when i first started work. Things change like it or not (as long as it's not our name)
