6.30pm update: Cardiff City set to make £5.5m bid for Burnley star Jay Rodriguez

CARDIFF CITY are prepared to shatter their transfer record with an audacious £5.5m bid for Burnley hotshot Jay Rodriguez.

WalesOnline understands no official approach has been made by the Bluebirds, but the club has expressed a ‘strong interest’ in signing the 22-year-old striker, who fired 21 goals for the Clarets last season in the npower Championship.

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay rates Rodriguez the best striker outside the Premier League and has received the backing of the Bluebirds board to go out and land his man.

Cardiff face stiff competition for the England Under-21 international striker from a host of Premier League clubs.

Fulham have already had a £5m opening bid rejected by Burnley, who value their star player nearer £8m.

Everton boss David Moyes is interested in Rodriguez too, although the Toffees would need to off-load players first to meet the asking price.

Newcastle, Norwich and newly-promoted Southampton and Reading are all reportedly chasing Rodriguez’s signature as well.

That means the Bluebirds face a major battle to land their man with Rodriguez thought to desire a move to the top-flight irrespective of the offers from so many other clubs.Burnley-born, Rodriguez came through as a trainee at the Lancashire club.

If the Bluebirds are successful in their hunt they would break their former transfer record of £4m paid to Sunderland to bring striker Michael Chopra back to the Welsh capital in July 2009.

It would also be a record for Welsh club football as a whole, with none of our league clubs having ever paid out as much.

Swansea’s transfer record currently stands at the £3.5m they paid Watford for Danny Graham last summer ahead of their debut season in the Premier League, although they will have to eclipse that to land their number one summer target, last season’s loan recruit Gylfi Sigurdsson. :D

Wudnt believe it untill it happens, He will prob bid too late again or some other petty excuse like the last few. Sigurdson would of been the best sigining this summer for us. But looks like Everton or Wolves will prob beat us to it.
