" Malaysians and Council Meeting "

Pretty much shows that the Malaysians are in it for the long term, but suggests the red issue has actually been scrapped as they're looking for different types of investment! hmmm we'll see.. :?

Cardiff City bosses hold talks with Cardiff Council over Asian investment

Cardiff City’s chairman has held high level talks with the city’s political leaders about attracting Asian business investment into the capital.

Dato Chan Tien Ghee, known as TG, last week met with council chief executive Jon House and the new cabinet member for economic development, Russell Goodway.

The Labour administration now in control of the council is keen for the city to capitalise on the football club’s strong links to the Far East through its Malaysian investors.

Coun Goodway, who was formerly leader of the council for 12 years until 2004, says this includes promoting Cardiff as an investment opportunity to the Malaysian government.

“The whole purpose that we entered into the deal with Cardiff City football club to relocate the stadium and help create the conditions to get the club in the Premier League was to capitalise on that for the city,” Coun Goodway told the Echo.

“The payback was always meant to be through the profile that a leading football club could have throughout the world. One day we would like to be a Manchester United or a Chelsea, but that may not happen in five years or even 10 years.

“A football team can do vast amounts to increase the profile of cities in the Far East nations, such as Malaysia and we would want to use the links that the club’s owners have.”

Coun Goodway stressed just how well-connected TG and the club’s main investor, billionaire businessman Vincent Tan, were with business and political leaders Asia.

“One of the things that came across very clearly in conversation I was having is in Malaysia these guys are very well-connected. The Malaysian government are always looking for opportunities for their companies to invest abroad,” he said.

“We would hope to work in partnership with the Welsh Government to ensure that we capitalise on those links and other inward investment opportunities we could offer.

“We certainly offered our support and indicated that they now have in Cardiff a business savvy council who understand that if you are going to have a successful football club you need to have underpinning that a successful business – you have to make a surplus.”

Here the story save you taking the link:

Cardiff City’s chairman has held high level talks with the city’s political leaders about attracting Asian business investment into the capital.

Dato Chan Tien Ghee, known as TG, last week met with council chief executive Jon House and the new cabinet member for economic development, Russell Goodway.

The meeting took place last week as the Bluebirds’ Malaysian backers confirmed their commitment to Cardiff City following the controversy caused by leaked proposals to re-brand the club.

A plan to change the colour of the home shirt to red and replace the club’s Bluebird badge with a Welsh dragon were shelved as TG returned to Malaysia for further talks with billionaire Mr Tan about future financial support.

Coun Goodway said securing “tens of millions” in investment to boost Cardiff City’s ambition of reaching the Premier League was far more important than the colour of their kit.

His views were at odds with those of Cardiff’s Labour AMs who said at the time called on the Malaysians to “consult on these plans before destroying more than 100 years of history and tradition”.

Coun Goodway added: “I share a lot of what the fans feel, that if someone is going to invest tens of millions I would not care what colour they play in.”

The discussions also included plans to increase capacity at Cardiff City Stadium to 35,000 and establishing international standard training facilities in the city. Coun Goodway, however, declined to comment on what sites were being considered for the training facility.

In a statement, council leader Heather Joyce said: “The owner’s aspirations for Cardiff City will help to further enhance Cardiff as one of Europe’s premier sporting cities.

“I look forward to establishing a strong partnership with Cardiff City and working together for the good of the club and the city as a whole.”

Alan Whiteley, Cardiff City’s chief executive, said: “We appreciate the importance of working closely with Cardiff council and I am delighted that the new council leader, Councillor Heather Joyce, and her team are committed to helping the football club grow and develop for future generations of Cardiff City fans.”

This is really fantastic news for Cardiff City as a Whloe, if Malaysia do invest in Cardiff the off spin could be worth mils to the City of Cardiff and lets hope the rest of Wales. If things should go well ,I could see other Asian countrys again looking at Wales as an investment Opportunity. Its about time Wales its self can open up its doors to the World as a trading country and let them know Wales is open for business. :old:

When people say that the public have sort memories when it comes to politics is certainly right when people are supporting the likes of Russell Goodway :o

Until the last few years, Cardiff Council had never helped Cardiff City or done anything for our club. I rem in the 70's/80's and 90's Cardiff City and the media would ask the Council to help us or work with us and the door would always be closed. Hmm how things have changed, once they see success.

Back in the bad old days, the council leaders did not want to know us, why? we had nothing but problems for them with policing cost, the bad publicity that we were attracting, to the City . The club had no real financial clout. The Council can see a chance of some investment into the City, and surrounding areas, and why not? I just hope that everyone wins with/if the Malaysians investment. :D :D :D

This is all about politics and business. Do anyone think that one day ,Peter Risedale will be thanked for bringing the Malaysians to us ( I am not trying to wind anyone up it is a serious question) :o :o :o :o :o

Despite the Riddler's many faults, he was not all bad. He helped secure the stadium during the final stages, he brought in the Malaysians and he doesn't get the credit he deserves for the pricing structure at the new stadium for season tickets (particularly in attracting kids).

It's never black and white - always shades of grey...

That's very true Annis but I don't believe in looking backwards or holding grudges. The City Council are under new management and this one is far more football friendly that those that went before it.

Let's forget any short commings previous Council's had in the past and work for a better future, one which will last.

You have to wonder how things would have turned out if he had stayed in charge in 2004 though. Sam Hammam would probably got the stadium (without the Blues ironically) and PMG wouldn't have got their hands on the land assets.

With the income from the retail park/hotel/KFC etc we would by now be almost debt free and would have no need to have to change our club colours to survive and would have made the Premiership along time ago and could even have had an FA Cup/League Cup wins in that time.

Best of all we would have avoided the Ridsdale years.
