RIP Bluebirds fan Roy Chesterman

Tue May 22, 2012 8:02 pm

My friend and fellow Worcester Bluebird, Phil Price, has asked me to post the incredibly sad news of the passing of massive Cardiff City fan, Roy Chesterman.

66 year old Roy, a former Football League Referee, who had also held senior positions within the Welsh FA, passed away suddenly on Saturday night at home in Worcester. Originally from New Tredegar and a season Ticket holder in the Ninian Stand, Roy never missed a home game, and travelled regularly with Phil, myself and other Worcestershire based Bluebirds to follow ‘the City’ away.

A wonderful character, loyal, funny and Bluebirds mad, Roy will be greatly missed by Phil and all of us who were lucky enough to have had the pleasure of knowing him.

Goodnight Roy, god bless and may you rest in peace.

Pete, excellent tribute . Many great memories, up and down that M50 with him last 5 years .
Laughing with phil last night how my lad ryan used to play him up in the back of the car.

Best memorie I have is him chasing those Leeds United fans out of Strensham Services with a wet floor sign, truly comical.

He was for ever telling me off for using my mobile whilst driving , little things like that will always remember .
RIP Roy

Steve and Ryan.

I played for Cwmsefiog back in the sixties when Roy was the chairman and worked with him at Hymac. I had lost touch for many years but knew him well back then. Sad news. Roy was a good man. Good Referee too. Condolences to the family.

Really sad to hear the news of Roys passing we have lost a real character. I knew Roy for many years through his work with the Rhymney Valley Football League and like many others I didn't always see eye to eye with him but never doubted his commitment to football.

My first memory of Roy is when he fined me for submitting an incorrect result sheet for an U10 game in the Rhymney Valley Football League. We had just won our first match of the season, a 4-1 win and we only had 8 players on the day, and Roy took it for granted that the result had to be "Wrong". My club secretary went ape with me and told me I would have to pay the fine "To teach me a lesson", it was only £2 but on principal I went to see Roy and explained that I had only taken the team over that Saturday because the boys previous team manager had refused to train them because they "Were Rubbish".

Roy told me I know that guy he thinks he is "Bob Paisley" (Shows how long ago it was) your club is better off without him. He then explained to me why he had fined me, but, because it was my first game he would forget it. I remember him saying I will just change the result to a 4-1 defeat and that will be the end of it. But Roy I said we won 4-1, seriously he said? and when I said yes he burst out laughing and said "God I wish I had been there I would have loved to see the look on their managers face. Another idiot who thinks he is the manager of Man Utd.

I went on to work with Roy on the Rhymney Valley Football League and we were the best of friends until he left and moved to Worcester. Many thought him to be a miserable sod but he had a wonderful sense of humour and I won't be the only one saddened by this news.

R.I.P Roy
