DAVID MARSHALL SIGNS 4YR DEAL WITH CARDIFF CITY :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

SCOTLAND goalkeeper David Marshall is set to sign a new four-year deal at Cardiff City – and will face competition from Joe Lewis next season.

Former England Under-21 cap Lewis has agreed a three-year contract and, like Marshall, will sign on the dotted line next week.

Lewis was a free agent after his contract at Peterborough ended and replaces Tom Heaton, who left the Bluebirds this week.

The 24-year-old joined Posh in a £400,000 deal from Norwich in January 2008 and went on to make nearly 200 appearances for the Cambridgeshire club.

The 6ft 4ins shot-stopper, who was previously loaned out to Stockport and Morecambe, hit the headlines in May 2008 when he was called into Fabio Capello’s England squad for a friendly game in Trinidad & Tobago.

Lewis didn’t win a senior cap but he did make five appearances for England at under-21 level.

He found his opportunities limited under Posh manager Darren Ferguson last season and, ironically, his final appearance came in a 3-1 defeat at Cardiff on February 14.

Lewis will face a fight for first-team football with Marshall who was Mackay’s first choice shot-stopper in the campaign just finished.

The 27-year-old Scot had one year left on his contract but he has now agreed a new deal which will tie him to the Bluebirds until 2016.

Marshall joined Cardiff in July 2009 on a free transfer from Norwich and was actually at Carrow Road at the same time as Lewis.

Following the capture of Lewis, Mackay is pulling out all the stops to strengthen his squad and build on his excellent first season at Cardiff.

But his attempts to sign the highly-rated Fleetwood Town striker Jamie Vardy proved unsuccessful.

The Bluebirds’ £1m bid was accepted but they lost out on personal grounds as Vardy, 25, opted for Leicester as it is closer to Sheffield where his young daughter lives.

“We were interested but the lad chose Leicester and we wish him all the best,” said Mackay.

“Sometimes things go your way in these situations and sometimes they don’t.

“That’s the way it is.

“We have a list of players we are looking at and so we move on.”

“I can assure everyone we are working very hard to bring in the quality and depth we want in our squad next season.”

Wow that's long
Might have been an idea to sign a second keeper before doing that?

I think it's not a bad idea. He hasn't always got to be our number one so a 4 year contract gets us a decent number one goalie and an excellent reserve goalie for a long time.

I think there is a clue in there to the commitment of investment too. ;)

Brilliant news.

Think some of you forget how hard it is to get a keeper of Marshall's solidarity on the whole and consistency, the amount of points and reflexes saves he's given us over the years, top class keeper. Those saying Heaton are unfair, Malky sees them train everyday and would surely have a bit of bias of anything to the younger keeper. Heaton's played less than 10 this season ffs, and made a mistake vs Palace away...

Delighted, a sellable asset if needed for a few pennies if we improve!

SBF do you mean commitment by the owners to pay such a contract or commitment by Marshal because he is aware of how good the investment will be?

Owners signing players on long contracts.

Why splash on a 4 year contract when things are supposedly up in the air? Two years would be more than sufficiant IMO.

He is a good age for keeper and has been excellent this season but 4 years is long.

Surely will put off potential new keepers though.

I'd think negotiations have been going on the same time.

I'd be happy to start the season with these guys

Yep me too.

I think we have been lucky the last few years to have to good goalies. It was hard to lose Heaton but it doesn't look like we will be much weaker in that department if at all.

My feeling.
We have spaces of good, poor, decent poor, good keepers etc

Marshall is the best for many a year though, Infact the best I've seen for city (Heaton a close second).

Whats wrong with 4 years, If he is good enough to keep the number 1 stop great, If not we'll have a good keeper as reserve.

Hes a great championship level goalkeeper, delighted to have that level of commitment from a player
Obvious areas of marshys game need improving(his kicking his dreadful, but surely can be worked on) but in my opinion had his best season with us so far this time
Excellent penalty save from that rat marlon king :ayatollah: :ayatollah:
