THAT OTHER sport in Wales

Fri May 18, 2012 8:08 pm

Anyone else watch on s4c tonight Pontypridd v Scarlets. I have watched the 2nd half and I must say the passion and endeavour seems much better at this level than the regional teams. Thousands packed into Sardis road and a fantastic old school atmosphere generated. Reminds of the old 80s' merit league. What do the rugby experts amongst us think ?

The hatred that existed between the original clubs easily rivalled Cardiff/Swansea in football

Thats right I remember Pooler v Newport or Newbridge v Ebbw etc always a charged up crowd :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

They should have just kept the teams as they were, but taken the top 6 or so and ran with them - Llanelli, Newport, Ponty, Swansea, Neath, and Cardiff. Maybe Ebbw Vale too. And have promotion or something workable.

Whenever city don't play I try to go to watch pontypool and we still get good atmospheres vs Newport. Not like the old days I doubt though lol

Thats right I remember as a schoolkid packing into Pontypool park to see the All Blacks play a world cup game there packed to the rafters it was. Its ironic that Newbridge for example in the 90's would have over 6,000 there packed in for Ponty, Neath, Llanelli etc great atmosphere under the floodlights personally i dont think the regions seem to be doing anything in Heineken cup and it does make you wonder why bother changing what was there in the 1st place :ayatollah:

I watch Neath RFC now and again, at home and away. I've been to Sardis Road a few times to watch Ponty v Neath and there's a fair atmosphere there, despite the small crowds.

The crowds have deserted rugby in Wales on the whole, it's just the big events now that everyone comes out for. Mind you, with the prices for the internationals, nobody can afford to watch the regions or the clubs after that.
