Bluebirds look to make ‘keeper Lewis first summer signing

May 17 2012

CARDIFF CITY have stepped up their interest in signing former England squad goalkeeper Joe Lewis despite financial uncertainties at the club.

Lewis, 24, is a free agent after his contract expired at Peterborough and would not command a transfer fee. And Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay sees Lewis as the ideal candidate to replace Tom Heaton, who left the club earlier this week.

Lewis made a £400,000 move from Norwich in January 2008, where he had been a trainee and former team-mate of Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall, and went onto make almost 200 appearances for Posh.

The 6ft 4ins shot-stopper previously had loan spells at Stockport and Morecambe and hit the headlines in May 2008 after helping Peterborough win promotion from League Two.

Lewis was called up to Fabio Capello’s England squad for a friendly in Trinidad & Tobago.

Norfolk-born Lewis was an unused substitute and never earned a senior cap for his country, but he did make five appearances for England at under-21 level.

He found his opportunities limited last season under Darren Ferguson and did not make a single appearance after featuring in Peterborough’s 3-1 defeat at Cardiff on February 14.

Mackay, however, faces serious competition from Championship rivals Ipswich for Lewis’ services.

Following Monday’s Bluebirds’ board meeting the amount Mackay has to spend in the summer transfer market remains unclear.

After fans reacted angrily to proposals to change Cardiff’s home kit from blue to red, chairman Dato Chan Tien Ghee and principal backer Vincent Tan have had to rethink their future level of commitment.

‘TG’ flew back to Malaysia yesterday to report on the board meeting.

To be fair, Talk Sport reported it as a done deal last night too. So likely hood is, he should sign today?

Not being negative and I hope it works out well but Ive spoken to Posh fans who say he's not that good and he was released because of that ...... time will tell I guess ??

I have never been Joe Lewis's biggest fan because he seems very inconsistent but he wouldn't be number one so it's hard to find a competent keeper on a free who would be happy to start off as second fiddle. So this transfer doesn't really disappoint me.

To be fair I think Malky should get free's first, there's loads out there this season. Make the most of it. Look at Gareth McLeary going to Reading yesterday, great player for fk all

Another really good signing if Malkay can pull this off.

Fingers crossed.

Perhaps he's been given permission to replace like for like. Lose a keeper, sign a keeper sort of thing.

I thought it was a similar situation to Heaton?

my mates a peterboro season tkt holder he said hes good shot stopper and good kicker but afaid to come off his line take crosses and command his area he said he thought he was better than he was, my opinion is he,s still young and can only get better only time will tell if and when he signs

Re: "Bluebirds look to make ‘keeper Lewis first summer signing"

that sounds like Marshall to me! I sit in line with 6 yard line and he just never, ever comes for a cross, even a floated one where he has more time - on the rare occasion he does come he often tries to punch, and appears to flap a bit.

I don't understand as he is obviously a talented 'keeper. That said if we was good at crosses too he would be in the Premiership... :? bit like Super Kev, if he was good at passing to a bloke in blue he'd be in the Prem with him

Makes sense, I'd rather have a younger, cheaper and slightly less quality keeper who is content to be backup than a quality one who will be more expensive and be difficult to keep happy on the bench. Makes sense to replace Heaton, would be a sensible signing :ayatollah:

So has Malky replaced a decent back up keeper with someone more cheaper and shitter then? What the fucks he playing at?????

Have to ask the same question.Heaton = proven quality. Lewis = liability. I knwo that you cant make a player sign a contract if he doesn't want too, but it appears from the outside that we didn't try hard enough to persuade Heaton his future lay with us.

Re: "Bluebirds look to make ‘keeper Lewis first summer signing"

Thu May 17, 2012 8:42 pm

here we go again,a player being called shit and he hasnt had a chance to prove himself.what is it with some supporters of this club.and you wonder why some players dont sign for us.

Re: "Bluebirds look to make ‘keeper Lewis first summer signing"

Whenever Heaton has had a decent run in the team I always thought his positioning was suspect and he therefore let in too many goals he should be saving. He put in some excellent performances in the cup run but always thought Marshall was the better keeper and excellent at this level. Therefore we only need backup and joe Lewis would be excellent back up who could compete for a first team place as he matures over the next couple of seasons.

So Lewis was in Capellos England squad last season yet he's worse than Heaton? Ok! Millers better than Bothroyd too yeah?

Where is this signing anyway? Thought it was 99.9% done???

Perhaps having seen him play several times, I may be entitled to have an opinion on his ability if its OK with you. Just because he may sign for us, we are automatically supposed to think he's brilliant are we? I've always got behind all opf our players good or bad, but to me this signing just makes no sense - we have Parrish who is a Malky signing who has not made the bench once, so if he is as decent as he looks in training, why are we signing what looks like a cut place replacement for the man who in quite a few people on here's eyes was our best keeper when we already have someone signed last season.

We want three keepers.

If one gets injured we want to be able to put a third on the bench, Santiago's been released so he's clearly not good enough and I think the next goalkeeper we have is Liam Matthews who's something like 17(?) so we need either a better second choice or a decent 3rd choice. Joe Lewis fits the bill perfectly.
