Who are they I hear you say?
Well they are top of Ligue 1 by 2 points with 2 games to go, and Laurent Blanc and Cantona used to play for them. What's so impressive about that?
For one they have never won the French league before and finished 14th last year. Now dont jump to conclusions and assume they have a multi billionaire bankrolling them. They dont and are clear of PSG, who were taken over by an Arab consortium last year and immediately sanctioned the record France transfer fee, purchasing Javier Pastore for almost €40M. But little old Montpellier have an ace up their sleeve with Oliver Giroud banging them in, a fantastic target man, who I've really enjoyed watching this year in the usually dull Ligue 1, so much so that Bayern are now after him, alongside a few other gems like Belhanda.
It would be amazing that a team who's biggest trophies to date are the intertoto cup in 1999 and French cup in 1929 and 1930 could win a top European league, they've come from nowhere. A better version of this season's Newcastle if you like

3 points clear at the top actually
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... efault.stmBut fair play I've never heard of them before. If they really want to contest on the European stage they will need to keep hold of their starlets

Used to live not far from them in Sete but never got chance to see them play. Good to see a new team break through the ranks in one of the European Leagues.

I'd only heard about them this season but I didn't know about their recent history, they've done a remarkable job!

Great for Montpellier. First brought to my attention by Remi Gaillard. Check him out on youtube if you are unfamiliar with him.

French league will be insanely tight next year with 3 CL spots if Montpellier stay at the peak and Lyon and Marseille sort it out and stop becoming mid table cup team super duper Liverpool, although Lille are losing their talisman this summer, Eden Hazard
