MARKETING TO MALAYSIA

Wed May 09, 2012 8:28 pm

The changing of the kit and badge seems to be aimed towards making money from new fans in Malaysia.

I think there are problems with this strategy of VT.

1. To become attractive to Malaysians we need to either be a top 4 club (take a lot more than £100m!) or we need to be Malaysia's national Premier League team, this would mean changing the name of the club and being a franchise club for Malaysia.

2. To actually make money over there you need to be a seriously famous club. Manchester United, Liverpool & Arsenal have been successful for decades hence being popular with shirt sales etc. Chelsea & Manchester City's failure to crack the market as well isn't down to being blue, it is down to only recently becoming successful. In time it will come but it takes time and continued investment.

This means that to achieve his objectives, VT will either have to change our club to a Malaysian National Team, name and all, put a lot more than £100m and wait a long time (more money...)

I don't think those three can happen! Even those who don't mind the kit and badge change will surely not stand for a name change? He is only worth £750m, VT cannot put in the money Chelsea & Man City have had.

This could end in tears either way.
