New York Red Bulls / FC Red Bull Salzburg

Perfect case of a club being rebranded: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Bull_New_York

It has worked in their favour, will it ours??

But in Austria, the Austria FA stepped in and prevented this happening to Salzburg but ultimately changed their name to FC Red Bull Salzburg: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Bull_Salzburg_FC

It disgusts me, nothing else to say.

It's a perfect example of a club's identity being removed and forgotten about.

Was about to post something similar. I was a City fan before the birth of MLS, but if I have a second team it would be the MetroStars/RBNY since I grew up in NY. I can tell you this, MetroStars fans are still furious about the rebranding and the fact that the club is run by a set of absentee owners somewhere in Austria. However, I do think that this might be comparing apples to oranges since a) MLS operates on a salary cap and therefore Red Bull (the company) can't pump anywhere near the amount of money into the club as is being suggested by VT, b) Unlike City's owners, I'm not sure the RBNY owners have ever stepped foot in the stadium, and c) The MetroStars were only around for less than a decade before the rebranding as opposed to our long history.

So in essence, the rebranding of the MetroStars stripped a very young club of its identity without the promise of nearly as much money as VT is "suggesting" (I'll believe it when I see it). Plus, the RBNY owners aren't nearly as involved as ours. I think the RBNY situation is a good deal worse on most levels except for the most important aspect...the club history. RBNY lost a few years of miserable history. Cardiff City stand to lose over 100 years of identity. Gut wrenching.

If there is any consolation though, the main RBNY message board is still titled www.metrofanatic.com and you can still often hear "metro" chants during games. It's up to us to keep "the bluebirds" alive and I have all the faith in the world that we can and will keep it alive and kicking for years to come.

The MLS has only been in existence since the mid 90s so it wasnt as if the Metrostars lost 100 years of history like us. Plus these type of things are common place in American sports where clubs are treated like franchises. It is a completely different environment to British football.

Most unlucky team in the league and they've always worn at least a bit of red.

i wouldnt take much note of american sports team most of them are franchises and remodelling or relocation can be done rather easily.
to formulate an effective argument id take note of salzburg what arguments their fans made and where they failed and how we can improve on that point, with which arguments worked and those that did not
