Todays news is more proof, if not confirmation, that all football is a business.
The Malaysians have secured our future but are now planning to re-brand our club. I've seen clubs change their badge (we did it a few years ago), change stadium names but I have never seen a re-brand of this magnitude. Club colours, club nickname and club badge all to be changed immensely. Since I started going to watch City back in 1993, the chant was always "BLUEBIRDS, BLUEBIRDS", now in the space of a day thats all changed.
The Malaysians don't see Cardiff City as a football club, they see it as a business. They've seen the business fail to reach it's goal (the Premiership) over the last few years, now in the business world if you fail to reach targets you change/re-launch/ re-brand. Call it what you like, but things change. The colour red in Asia is seen as a colour of good luck and brings good fortune and joy. The colour red is quite a big thing in Asia, so the owners see that if they rebrand the club with the colour red then it will bring good luck, good fortune and joy....in other words the Premiership.
The owners obviously think this is a great idea, but now the news is out in the open they may actually see that it isn't. To change our clubs identity is a huge risk, one that could have big repercussions! Fans already saying they'll hand the season ticket back if the idea goes ahead. When you think of Cardiff City you think blue. We've been blue for 100 years or so, our "BLUEBIRDS" chant is unique.
There's talk of the owners investing £100m into the club, a huge amount of money but to re-brand the club in the way they intend to could blow up in their face.
I hope they sit down and analyse what they intend to do and take on board what the fans are saying. After all fans = money, no fans = no money.
If the re-branding does go ahead then I'll continue to support Cardiff City, I for one will not stay away in protest but can fully understand the fans that do. They players need our support, and we don't want our club to turn into a fans v owners club like Blackburn, Rangers, Portsmouth and Leeds.
We're Cardiff City....no matter what.
