Former England under 21 manager Ray Wilkins says Peter Whittingham will be the key player in Cardiff City's Championship play-off semi-final against West Ham United.
The Bluebirds are aiming to join Swansea City in the Premier League next season, but must emerge play-off winners against West Ham and then either Birmingham City to achieve that goal.
Wilkins knows Whittingham well from his days coaching England's under-21 squad and says: "I know Whitts really well, we used to call him 'bothered' because, every now and again, he doesn't look too bothered. That can look frustrating from the sidelines, but then he will pop up with something special.
"He has genuine ability and for me he should have been playing at Premier League level for a few seasons now. Peter played for Aston Villa at the top level and I always felt, bless him, that he needed a little bit of a rocket up his backside.
"Talent-wise, he is as good a left-footer as you will see. Cardiff have had some good quality left-footed players over the years - just look at Stephen McPhail - and Whitts has a left which could open a tin of backed beans.
"He should have been playing Premier League football well before now and it would be nice to see him at the top level with Cardiff City. He has quality. The Premier League is full of top quality and he will only add to that.
"The Cardiff v West Ham semi-final is too close to call, I really can't split the teams. Peter, though, has the inner desire and ability to produce that special moment which may be needed to split the teams over two games."
