What a day, the away end which was massive and was in the location where the supermarket stand now is, was rammed full of us, not sure if there was 6 or even 8 thousand of us there, i'm sure someone will put me straight.
I'm hopeless on stats and details but I think Tony Evans scored and we won 1 nil, Malcolm Allison was the manager there at the time, and he didn't take the defeat to well and described us as small time and reckoned we only won because we raised our game in front of their huge home crowd of 30,000, and went on to say we could only dream of such crowds.
The following week we played Hereford home on a Wednesday and 35,000 got in thru the turnstiles, with an estimated 5,000 over the walls and an estimate of I kid you not ten thousand who simply turned away after not being able to get within a mile of the stadium.
It was just a mad night and no one could have forseen it coming, Malcolm Allinson did us the biggest favour by throwing out a challenge and was made to eat his words.
The fans made the difference up at Palace that day and we can do the same this Saturday, play your part and make the trip.

great days . remember the old grange end bouncing literally ,for the Hereford game on the following Wednesday and an unbelievable noise.

That was the season [1976?] we got promoted at Bury - my first ever away game. We won 0-1 and Palace lost to Chester I think. Went with my father and we walked straight in without paying, there were weeds growing all over the stand we were in and there was a big pitch invasion afterwards. The Hereford game is still the biggest crowd I ever saw at NP and remember seeing all the Hereford coaches going in down Western Avenue as we made our way to the ground. What a game it was too. Ah happy days and Alston remains my favourite all time city player despite ony playing one season or so for us... Wish I could go on Saturday but finances dictate that its one I have to miss. I'm sure the huge city following will represent the club brilliantly and roar us on to the result we need

I remember it well. It was Adrian Alston who scored. While many City fans were behind the goal there were also loads of us in the end section of the stand on one side of the pitch. A fantastic day followed by the Hereford game the following Wednesday night. 35649 in Ninian Park if I remember correctly but it seemed like about 50000 in there. I could only manage to get in the Canton Stand that night and I'm sure I can remember announcements being made over the tannoy for the fans on the terraces to move forward to let the fans still trying to get in to be able to get onto the terraces.

i was there that day as well gwyn i remmber it well when we were in a double tier terrace behind the goal i reckon there was easliy ten thousand city fans there that day when we scored our end went mental .its one of my alltime great away days following city iwas only fourteen at the time and we won the battles outside the ground as well
Mon Apr 23, 2012 5:19 pm
My 1st away trip gwyn, unbelievable atmosphere, i remember malcolm allison coming over to us and waving his fedora hat and being abused by 6000,and then being in the grange end a few days later v hereford with the biggest crowd i ever saw there, just about got in and even better night.

i too thought it was tony evans who scored the winner at palace age and memory do not go together well!
the away end at palace was huge and it was full of city, fantastic scenes at the end when we won as palace were just behind us in the league.
allison really did not take it too well and said we would be lucky to get 20k for the hereford game and in fact 35k turned up.
there were 35k in the ground with the capacity at 55k where the other 20k would have fitted i do not know.
i really think that there were closer to 50k in the ground that night,i still recall jimmy scoular saying the highest paid people at cardiff city were the gate men, as im sure it was one for the club, one for me, i think the gate men that night probably paid for a nice hol in the sun!

1975/76 was the year I bought my 1st Cardiff City season ticket on the old Grange End and what a great season it was ,big games and big atmospheres against Palace,Hereford and Millwall all pushing for promotion,Palace away was my 1st away trip and I traveled up with the infamous B-Troop,what I eye opener that was,I was in orr of the City following that day we seemed to be everywhere.
Mon Apr 23, 2012 8:32 pm
Yes remember it well gwyn, great atmosphere at palace and at home to hereford, hereford were already up as champions i,m sure we beat them 2-0 with goals from out two midfield men, cambell and livermore, great memories!!!!
Mon Apr 23, 2012 8:34 pm
75/76 was the best season ever. Simple as that really. Clinched it at Bury, with Adrian Alston getting the goal. Then the long, hot summer. 18, and not a care in the world. I doubt if even promotion to the premiership could beat it. Will live with me forever.
Mon Apr 23, 2012 9:16 pm
i remember that game, i think it is the 3rd biggest crowd i have seen at ninian park after real madrid and everton, i think he said cardiff wont get 25,000
Mon Apr 23, 2012 10:36 pm
I was there palace/Hereford/Everton Fantastic memories!!!
Tue Apr 24, 2012 12:08 pm
I was at that Hereford game at Ninian Park and i believe it was a record crowd for a 3rd division game at the time

We beat Hereford 2-0 and Ninian Park went balistic the crowd was given has 35,500 odd but there was well over 40,000 in that crowd that night and you were squeezed shoulder to shoulder on the Bob Bank and as the crowd surged forward you just had to go with it whether you liked or not.
Great days to be a City fan and Tony Evans & Adrian Alston were my heros at the time along with 'Joe' Dwyer we finished has runners up and celebrated like mad at Bury

I was also there, and if I remember didn't they play Man U the week before in the cup, and I can recall that we had more support there than united, Wasn't our manager Jimmy Andrews? and I think that he recieved a bottle of bubbly from MA, Hereford home I would say there was 50 000 there and it was packed to the rafters
