HUDSON "EMBARRASSED" BY WONDER GOAL

Wed Apr 18, 2012 7:25 am

CAPTAIN Mark Hudson admitted feeling 'embarrassed' after his 68-yard wonder goal secured a 2-0 victory for Cardiff City against Derby County.

The Bluebirds were defending a 1-0 lead when Hudson smashed a shot from well inside his own half high over County keeper Frank Fielding.

The strike sparked wild celebrations inside Cardiff City Stadium, with Hudson saying afterwards: "I feel a bit embarassed about it - I didn't expect that to go in."

Hudson's strike was further out than David Beckham's magnificent goal scored for Manchester United against Wimbledon in the 1990s, and the skipper added: "I took a touch and the ball sat up. Thousands of fans were shouting 'shoot' and the keeper was off his line.

"I caught it sweet, but I still couldn't believe it when the ball hit the net. Everything seemed to be in slow motion. It was a bizarre feeling and in some ways I'm happier with the clean sheet than the goal. But it came at the perfect time.

"A bit of luck went our way. We didn't play well, but we worked hard for the points."

City's analytical staff confirmed the shot was from 68 yards and manager malky Mackay said: "It was a great bit of skill from Mark - and he absolutely meant it. That was no fluke, he went for goal."

The Bluebirds need one win to make sure of a top six finish, with Mackay adding: "We've earned 10 points from the last 12 on offer and we are unbeaten in eight, the longest run in the Championship.

"But we haven't completed the job yet and need another three points to make sure we are in the play-offs. Our match against Leeds United this Saturday is going to be tough - and no team managed by Neil Warnock will do anything but fight all the way."

City's match will start at 12.30pm, giving them the chance to secure a top six finish before their rivals kick-off.

They've got nothing to play for - so an early goal should put us in the driving seat.

Excellent goal btw for Huds, sparking a few funny songs of in the canton!

Wasn't there last night....but me and my son were jumping around the front room listening to BBC Wales.
Reading Mark Hudsons interview on the BBC website this morning is a breathe of fresh air, his humility shines through and I found it rather touching that he said he heard the crowd shouting shoot so he had a go......Well Done Captain :ayatollah:

Hell of a goal. My son's face was a picture when it went in. He'll have a laugh with his mates in school about that beauty.

It was a bizarre feeling and in some ways I'm happier with the clean sheet than the goal.

Sums up the class of the man for me.

On the interview on CC Player immediately after the game he said immediately that the 3 points and a clean sheet were far far more important, he barely gave the goal a mention! :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

A brilliant goal but he has been excellent all season.

Funnily enough I said during the first half when I was looking around the team that Huds has to be in the running for player of the season, he really has been a rock.
