MACCA : "SEIZE THE CHANCE"

Mon Apr 16, 2012 6:39 am

STEPHEN McPhail has told his Cardiff City team-mates to seize their promotion play-off opportunity in the next five days and put an end to their stuttering home form.

Malky Mackay’s Bluebirds have matches against Derby tomorrow night and then Leeds on Saturday at Cardiff City Stadium, knowing two wins will probably cement a place in the top six.

City’s 1-0 win on their travels at Barnsley at the weekend keeps them two points ahead of nearest rivals Middlesbrough, who are seventh, and put them level on points with Blackpool and just three behind Birmingham in fourth.

Those four clubs are effectively battling it out for three play-off places, with one of Southampton, Reading or West Ham guaranteed to be in the mix.

City have their fate in their own hands, but know they have not win at home since defeating Peterborough way back on Valentine’s Day.

McPhail declared it is time to end the barren run, saying: “We’ve given ourselves a great chance and we must go out and take it.

“We have two great clubs, Derby and Leeds, coming to our ground this week and we need points. They are massive games and we know what we have to do.

“There have been too many drawn games at home, where we have dominated at times and then given silly points away.

“But we are in a great position and must make the most of it.

“There are three or four of us who have been in this situation with Cardiff before and it’s agonising when you don’t get there.

“But we have learned from the experiences and we will make sure we pass our knowledge on to the rest of the team.”

McPhail’s fellow Republic of Ireland international Liam Lawrence scored the only goal at Barnsley, heading in for his first goal for the club.

“It was great for him to score and win the game for us,” said McPhail. “Liam has great experience, has been there and done it. It’s vital our experienced players stand up over the next few weeks.

“His goal earned us a big win at Barnsley.

“The gaffer said at half-time to keep it tight. We didn’t want to concede and knew that we have the players to create and score a goal.

“Our job is to keep going and pick up points from what are two massive home matches coming up.”

We are in a much better position than Middlesbrough. We are two points up on them and I think they will get 7 points max from there last 3.

Not an easy last 2 fixtures.
Tue 17 19:45 H Doncaster Rovers (lost 5, and drawn 1 ,of last 6)
Sat 21 17:20 H Southampton (won 3, drawn 1, lost 2, of last 6)
Sat 28 12:30 A Watford (won 3, drawn 2, lost 1, of last 6)
Middlesbrough won 1, drawn 3, lost 2.

Ours are all very winnable and I predict we will take at least 7 points from these.
Tue 17 19:45 H Derby County FLC (won 2,drawn 2,lost 2, of last 6)
Sat 21 12:30 H Leeds United FLC (won 2, lost 4, of last 6)
Sat 28 12:30 A Crystal Palace FLC ( drawn 2, lost 4, of last 6)
Cardiff won 2,drawn 4.

Middlesbrough look almost certain to beat Doncaster on Tuesday so we will need to get at least a draw against Derby. Our better form and easier fixtures after that puts us clearly in the driving seat, but we must not take anything for granted. If we can beat Derby on Tuesday it would snuff out Middlesbrough confidence. We certainly cannot afford to lose it, we need to at least hold our top 6 position going into the last 2 games and keep it in our hands.Come on you Bluebirrrrddds!

Macca is right - the experienced players need to come to the fore now :ayatollah:

He is certainly doing his bit - we're always a better team when he plays :ayatollah:
